CPT Byers was killed in Kunduz, Afghanistan. This was his third deployment. He was deployed to Iraq in 2009, Africa in 2015, and to Afghanistan in June of 2016. He was 30 years old and based at Fort Carson in Colorado. He was killed with one other soldier, Sgt. 1st Class Ryan A. Gloyer, 34, of Greenville, Pa., when they landed by helicopter in Kunduz Province with the Afghan military and came under enemy fire. CPT Byers was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). More than 30 Afghans were killed in the firefight.
His medals include the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
