Illegal Students

Often, I use this column to point out humorous or downright ridiculous practices of government. It's very easy to do, since government seems to have elevated this habit to an art form. Take, for example, the school districts around Cleveland, Ohio.

This story comes to me from American Newspeak (www.scn.org/news/newspeak). Judy Kincaid, of Cleveland, Ohio, spent five days in prison for sending her child to school. She sent her inner city child to a suburban kindergarten without "authorization." The article terms this practice "illegal school registration," a crime that is happening with increasing frequency these days. Long waiting lists and crowded inner-city classrooms force parents to enroll their children in districts other than their own just to get basic education. Some schools have resorted to hiring private investigators to ferret out criminal students.

I don't quite know what to make of this. I guess the day has come when sending your children to school can be considered a crime. Think of all the kids who skip school or drop out. I think any kid who wants to go to school should be given every opportunity, but what do I know? I'm not the school district of Cleveland.
