A Victimless Society

I had a wonderful dream last night. I dreamed that our nation had been miraculously transformed into a society of responsible, rational individuals who don't blame government for their own shortcomings. Of course it's a silly fantasy, but a guy's allowed to dream, right? It only took the following news piece to convince me that we are far from such an idyllic society. Jeremy Dean of Burney, California is suing Shasta County for at least $700,000. It seems that Jeremy was involved in a car crash and feels the county is to blame. He was out drinking with some buddies and sat in the back of the car on the way home. As he leans his head out the window to vomit (what a lovely image), the driver veered off the road and Jeremy found out the hard way that his head and a tree trunk cannot occupy the same place at the same time. His lawsuit claims that it was the county's fault that the tree was so close to the road, and I heartily agree. I mean, the county officials have nothing better to do than go around measuring the distance to the road of every tree along every small dirt road in the county. Their first priority should be protecting their nauseated citizens from smacking into stationary objects at high speeds.

I hope I'm not the only person upset by the increasingly lawsuit-prone nature of society. There was a time when people had the nerve to take responsibility for their stupidity. Everyone, at one time or another, has done something completely senseless. I hope that next time you do something innane you take responsibility for it. Government, whether county or federal, makes plenty of mistakes without having to take responsibility for yours.
