Up first is a foreign contestant from South Africa who shot his 49-year old friend in the face, seriously wounding him, while the two practiced shooting beer cans off each others' heads. Although I realize there are no laws against this, except that pesky little attempted manslaughter charge, you'd think common sense would prevail. I mean, I don't trust my good friends to point loaded weapons at me on those rare occasions when they're sober, so why would I do so when they're drunk?
Next up, a good ole American boy. Robert Ricketts, a 19 year old from Bowling Green, Ohio, had his head bloodied when he was struck by a train. He told police that he was trying to see how close to the moving train he could place his head without getting hit. Obviously, he misjudged the distance.
The last contestant for today comes from the San Jose Mercury News. An unidentified man, using a shotgun like a club to break a former girlfriend's windshield, accidentally shot himself to death when the gun discharged, blowing a hole in his gut.
Really, do I need to comment on this one? People like this make even the NRA reluctant to oppose waiting periods to purchase firearms. Maybe even an IQ test would help weed out potential dangers. Potential owners must accurately identify the muzzle end of a rifle.
Join me all week for a continuing series on the dangers stupid people pose to society, plus the highlights of my spring break. It's not like you have anything better to do.
