MajorJohn Patrick Whyte III was killed on Sunday, April 17, 2005 in a roadside vehicular accident outside Fort Leavenworth, KS.

MAJ Whyte is a 1994 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. After being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, at Ft. Bragg, NC. He served as a Rifle Platoon leader and Rifle Company Executive Officer.

After two years at Ft. Bragg, he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. He reported to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (AASLT) at Camp Casey, Korea, where he served as the Headquarters Company Executive Officer. Following his tour in Korea and completion of the Infantry Officer Advance Course, MAJ Whyte was assigned as a senior Platoon Trainer in Company A, 2nd Battalion, 11th Regiment at Ft. Benning.

MAJ Whyte continued his service by taking command of Company A, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. In January 2003, he deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He led his company successfully through every battle culminating in the occupationof Baghdad. Upon mission completion and deployment to Ft. Benning, GA, MAJ Whyte accepted a third command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. Upon PCSing to Ft. Leavenworth, MAJ Whyte worked for the Deputy Chief of Staff Resource Management as a program and budget analyst. MAJ Whyte was promoted on the 1st of December 2004 while stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.

Awards and Decorations include: Bronze Star Medal (with "V" Device); Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal (1OLC); Army Achievement Medal (3OLC); National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantryman's Badge; Expert Infantryman's Badge; Senior Parachutist Badge; Air Assault Badge; Ranger Tab.

MAJ John P. Whyte III is survived by his wife, Jennifer, his son Jack, and daughter Abigail (due in July 2005).
