David T. DiGiacinto, a business executive who developed a reputation for being a fiscal watchdog over a dozen years in Bethlehem government and won election in 2013 as the city's controller, died Sunday in his home. He was 61.

One year into his first term as controller, DiGiacinto was credited by colleagues for applying his real-world business sense to city government. He had spent more than three decades in the business world, working at companies from Pfizer Consumer Health to a New York private equity investment firm.

DiGiacinto entered civic life in 2003 when then-Mayor James Delgrosso appointed him to the Bethlehem Authority, the financial arm of the city's water business. After losing a bid for controller in 2007, DiGiacinto won a seat on City Council where he developed a niche as the go-to person on financial issues.
