Cornelius Begley Jr., Army major, American Express executive, 48

Mr. Begley, who died [May 15, 2002] in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, was employed with American
Express in New York City for 17 years, most recently as a vice president of human resources.
Before that, he was a career Army officer for 10 years before retiring as a major. He served as a field artillery officer
with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., and was a member of the staff and faculty at the U.S. Military Academy,
West Point, N.Y.
Mr. Begley earned an undergraduate degree in 1975 from the military academy, where he was a first team All East Division
I football player, and a masters degree in organizational development from Columbia University, New York City.
Mr. Begley was a coach and board member with the Little League and a recreation basketball and soccer coach, all in Freehold
Township. He was also a member of the Christian Brothers Academy Fathers Club, Lincroft.
He served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Robert Bellarmine Church.
Born in Queens, Mr. Begley lived in East Northport, N.Y. before moving to Freehold Township.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; sons, Army 1st Lt. Cornelius G. III, Matthew and Timothy; a brother, Gary, and a sister,
Karen Clark.
