Born in Lincoln, NE to first
generation immigrant Swedes. Third of three children and several years
younger than the others. Graduated from the University of Nebraska with
a degree in education. Married before graduation, she finished up during
WWII when her husband was overseas. Moved often during the depression as
her husband was on active duty with the CCC, mostly in the dustbowl states,
Arkansas, e.g. Returned to Lincoln in 1936 to have a baby and stayed until
the end of WWII. Traveled with husband to Germany, New York, and Virginia.
Was in Virginia when he died in Korea in 1955. She moved to Florida in
1961. Perpetual president of every volunteer organization in town, especially
women's organizations at church. Raised a Lutheran and remained one until
she found a mixed race Presbyterian church in Clearwater, FL that was floundering.
She saved it for many years. Did everything but preach and play the organ.
She was always the den mother, booster, or whatever her kids were involved
in. As a result of that and her church activities, she was constantly on
the go. Taught reading to illiterate migrant workers, for example, in between
Meals on Wheels runs. Disadvantaged by severe memory loss, she now lives
in Freedom Village, Bradenton, FL.
