Originally called Bill by all of us Thorsons and Coles, he decided he was Charlie when his boxing coach told him Bill was a "weak name". The family jock, he ran track, swam and played football in addition to boxing in high school, at Marquette (48-49) and at the Naval Academy (49-53). Graduated from USNA 3 JUN 53, commissioned 2d Lt in USAF. Attended flight training in Marana, AZ and Big Spring, TX. Rated single engine jet pilot 4 AUG 54. Completed combat crew fighter pilot tng in Jun 55, assigned charter faculty of US Air Force Academy in Oct 55. After the academy reported to Hickam Field, HI Nov 58. Flew all around the Pacific for MATS. Frequently called Palmer when stopping over on Okinawa. Reassigned to Univ of CO for a MSME degree in 61. Assigned to Tech Intel at Foreign Technology Division at Wright Pat in 63. Served in Viet Nam (1967), the Pentagon, Andrews AFB and Wright Pat for the remainder of his career. Medically retired (heart) 1973. Investor and professionally retired since.
