LTG Bagnal was a former commander of the United States Army Western Command (1985 to 1989), Deputy Commanding General for Training of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command , Deputy Superintendent at the United States Military Academy (1977 to 1980), Commander of the Officer Personnel Management Directorate for the United States Army Military Personnel Center, and Special Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel in Washington, DC (1981) . He is an alumnus of United States Army Command & General Staff College, Georgia Tech (Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering), the United States Army War College and McLenaghan High School in Florence, South Carolina (class of 1952). He retired August 31, 1989, and later obtained his juris doctor from the University of South Carolina and practiced law.
Among his awards are the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
There will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church Columbia, SC (date to be determined) and the funeral and internment services with full military honors will take place at West Point in late July or early August, 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy and Son, Joel.

Dad will have a graveside funeral service at the West Point Cemetery at 10 a.m. on July 14, 2015. The sequence of events follows:
· 0930 – Meet and Greet at Hogan’s Funeral Home (135 Main St., Highland Falls, NY 10928)
· 0945 – Depart for West Point Cemetery with Military Police escort
· 1000 – Honoring LTG (Ret) Charles W. Bagnal (USMA ‘56) @ West Point Cemetery
· 1045 – Depart for Reception (Eisenhower Hall Ballroom) escort provided
· 1230 – Conclude Reception and Bid Farewell
