14 JUN 2010 (chetkl): I have been renting thru Thrifty, joined their fast pass club and usually get an upgrade. Their prices are about the lowest I"ve found. Just a word of advice, avoid their cheaper cars, get an upgrade for a few bucks a day. The cheaper cars are really cheap, lacking stuff like power windows, power door locks, remote door openers, outside rear view mirror controls and the most underpowered motor you can imagine.
Their upgrades are still less expensive than others and I"ve never been hassled by them.

14 JUN 2010 (bob972): Hotwire is also an option, although with Hotwire once you book your credit card is automatically charged with no refund. I"ve also booked a few cars through the Costco "Travel" link, if you"re a member of Costco.

My best tip is book a car as soon as you can and keep this as a backup. You can check the sites every couple of days and the prices change daily and in some cases more often than that.
carrentals.com is a good site. Travelocity and orbitz are also good. Carrentals has some stuff that the other 2 don"t.
I have found the major players will not price match. Fox ( a much smaller company) often will.
Discount codes come from everywhere. Doing an on line for "rental car discount codes Las Vegas" will turn up a lot of junk and only occassionally a gem.
Like anything else, it"s work and you have to figure out how much time you want to spend to save the money. I have found the savings to be significant ( for $140 for 4 days to $70 for 4 days) but then again, I have rebooked to save $3 on the whole rental before.
