Bob - you were always there for the team in both soccer and boxing. I know you cleaned my face off a couple of times. It wasn't just that - you were the perfect gentleman. You certainly impressed my wife-to-be with your smiles and conduct. Sorry you've left us. Tom Turner December 22 - 2001 Bob - Mary and I miss you immensely. The fact our Dads were classmates added to the bond I felt with you. Having the opportunity to serve with you at the end of our careers had special meaning for me. We still celebrate your birthday every four years - Feb 29th. You were a great soldier - friend and man. Don Andrews May 11 - 2002 We called him "Dud" in G1 - but he was anything but. You could not ask for a better friend. I remember well the lean early days at Fort Benning when he - Jill - Mary and I settled for a game of bridge or hit the Officer's Club on dollar night. I remember too the more prosperous latter days when our paths would cross and we could manage a dinner out. He was always the same true friend - no matter where or when. He set an example for all of us serving God - family and country with deeds as well as words. He was a star who deserved his stars. A person who bore fruit in and out of season. Jim Devereaux November 19 - 2002 My brother--how can I express all my experiences and impressions? I look to West Point's motto of Duty - Honor - and Country. Bob not only loved his vocation/avocation as a soldier - he was married to it--sometimes to the sacrifice of my dear sister-in-law - Jill - and their children. But they accepted and understood his commitment to the defense of our nation and to Liberty. He (and his dad) were the most honorable men I have ever known. Sometimes it was inconvenient to have to live with their honesty and willingness to be be true to their word - but one could always depend upon it. Bob prayed for his country and for his day to day decisions. His love for - and submission to - Jesus took him to a higher plane - making him - an American General - a humble servant of God and of all the people God loves. My faith in our Nation resides in the fact that our government continues to raise people to authority like my brother. I pray that we will continue to do so. Marguerite Wiegand December 27 - 2002 I first met then BG Wiegand as a lowly SSG in Berlin when he visited Detachment A about 1983. I then had the pleasure to see him again when I was at Ft Bragg in 1985 and he pinned on my SFC stripes and later re-enlisted me. Having served almost 25 years - he was without a doubt one the finer individuals I had the pleasure to meet. J.H.Johansen MSG USA(Ret) March 5 - 2003 Bob and I spent four years together in G-1. There was not a nicer classmate in the company. He was our Honor Rep and served on the ring committee. He gave his time and energy to many endeavors that benefited the institution and our class. On graduation day he returned from greeting President "Ike" - donned his new Army uniform and served as a sword bearer at Ruthie's and my wedding. His picture made the NY Times. The photographer was late for the first wedding so our wedding made the news. We went separate ways after graduation but I always remember Bob as one of the special people at West Point. Rest in peace Bob. Ron Rule March 8 - 2005 |
