Doc was among my favorite company mates in I-2. He had a dry sense of humor which was ever active at the most unexpected times. He made the academic struggle a genuine laughable experience with his quick and thorough mind - and used to almost challenge the system to make it more demanding. I never saw him again after graduation - but years and years later when I had a stroke - his was the first call I received while still in the hospital. I'll never forget that - or the thoughtful friend who made it. Rest peacefully my friend. Chuck Roades April 1 - 2005 Classmates: On April 2nd - Jon Vanden Bosch and I joined Hilde - her brother Hans - her children and grandchildren - and a large gathering of friends - in a Memorial Gathering honoring Doc Schow - held near their home in Tallahassee - FL. The group included a large contingent from the West Point Society of Tallahassee. The service was followed by a family dinner - at which many memories of Doc were exchanged. Doc and Hilde were blessed with wonderful children - who are a great help and comfort to Hilde. Mary E. Schow - born in Anderson - SC - is a CPA - living in Jackson - Mississippi. Peter H. Schow - born at Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston - lives in Longmont - CO - and is a software engineer with Sun Systems. Peter has a daughter - Marie (age 15) and a son - Paul (12). Alice Schow Bowman and her husband - David G. Bowman - Jr. - both attorneys - live in Sarasota - FL with their two daughters - Caroline (age 11) and Madeline (7). Alice was born in Verdun - France. Doc will be inurned with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday - June 1 - 2005. Following the ceremony - Hilde has invited those attending to join her and the family at the Ft. Myer Officers Club. Reasonably - the O Club needs an approximate head count - so please let me hear from all probable attendees in the next two weeks. Very best to all .... Dave Wheeler 2 April 2005 June 1 - 2005 was a beautiful day at Arlington National Cemetery as Doc Schow’s family and Classmates gathered for his graveside services - with full military honors superbly rendered by the Old Guard. Following the services - all retired to the Ft. Myer Officers Club - where Hilde hosted a light lunch. Doc - old friend - well done: be thou at rest. David Wheeler 1 June 2005 Arlington Service June 8 - 2005 I want all to know that my father - Doc Schow - was a world-class dad! He loved his children dearly and overtly shared that love with us. He was an involved father in a time when it wasn't in vogue for fathers to change diapers - feed the children - bathe the children - etc. He was incredibly funny and as intelligent a person as could be. He was always kind to everyone in his life from his family - to his co workers to his subordinates to the bank tellers and the list goes on and on. Avidly interested in many - many things - he was the easiest person to buy a present for! I can't walk through a bookstore without still wanting to buy a book for him. He was my number one advocate in life and is sorely missed by all. Eccentric? Yes...but I am very proud to this day that he made me memorize (for $20.00) Lewis Carroll's poem of sheer nonsence - "The Jabberwocky." I can recite it to this day and am so pleased that I had a wacky enough father who enjoyed life enough to urge me to memorize something like that! Special thanks to Jack Doyle for making the Arlington ceremony (beneath a beautiful rainbow) a memory of lifetime. We feel such peace knowing that my dad is there and surrounded by many other good souls. Thanks also to Dave Wheeler and Jon Vanden Bosch for their support during this trying time. Finally - thank you to all of his classmates who showed up to the Arlington ceremony. It meant more than we can say. To you Daddy ("The Red Baron") - well done! You're in my constant thoughts and conversations and that will never change. Alice Schow Bowman June 9 - 2005 Doc and Hilda were together with Dave and Caye Wheeler and Connie and me at MIT for two great years of Grad School. We were among the Army's first graduate nuclear engineers. Whatever we did - we did together - studying during off-duty hours at school - working out lab problems - and all the varied activities that went on with the very tough MIT regimen. After that tour - we went our separate Army ways - but Doc was carved indelibly in our memories for his ever-present good humor and good common sense. Though we never served together again - Doc's strong personality and good humor were lasting memories of a wonderful tour together. I spoke with Doc after learning of his cancer in 2004 - and as might be expected he had nothing but positive things to say. I will always carry the greatest respect and affection for Doc: classmate - colleague - and great friend. Joe Franklin June 9 - 2005 |
