Funny - I always knew him as "Don" - not "Zeke" even though we spent years on the boxing team together. He was always a good buddy and friend. He was a truly great Captain of West Point's last official NCAA Boxing Team. Zeke carried that honor to the end by keeping his old teammates advised of Coach Herb's condition. I'm going to miss the e-mails and his hunting tales. So long comrade........ Tom Turner February 12 - 2002 Zeke was one of the good guys--simple - down-to-earth - no ego - no malice - loved to laugh - impossible to defeat. I hadn't seen him since graduation - but he called me a couple of years ago when passing through Atlanta. We had a good long talk - and there wasn't the slightest change in him that I could detect. He was solid as a cadet and I have no doubt that he was a solid citizen. The world could use a lot more like him. Russ Parsons February 12 - 2002 God be with you until we meet again. We were special. Al Parker February 12 - 2002 I still remember and appreciate Zeke's assistance and cooperation as we supported each other in confronting technical German as Yearling cadets. I know my grades and class standing in the subject would have been much lower without his help; I like to think my participation also helped him somewhat. Although we have not maintained contact throughout the years - I still remember him as a trusted friend and supporter. John Gamble February 12 - 2002 Being in different Regiments during our stay on the Rock I did not get to know Zeke well as a cadet - nor did our paths cross after 1955. I did cross paths with Zeke during summer trips and in the Corps Squad Area in Washington Hall. In every contact I had with Zeke - I found him to be extremely friendly and a hell of a good boxer where he ended up Captain of the '55 USMA Boxing Team. Well done Zeke - rest in peace. Willy Bill Welter February 13 - 2002 Zeke had everything you would want in a classmate ... friendly, cheerful and smiling - and a warm decent human being. How we all enjoyed the Saturday afternoon "punch-ups" at the Field House when he'd take on some palooka from Syracuse or Virginia. Rest in peace ... you honored us all by being our classmate. Jim Drummond February 14 - 2002 Zeke was of my roommates during plebe year - and an H-1 Company mate for four years. He was one of those people who never demanded much - but offered so much: his friendship - his down-home humor - his stories about North Dakota - just about anything and everything you wanted to talk about. I never knew there was a New England - North Dakota - until I met Zeke. We had a great bunch of guys in H-1 in 55 - but he was one of the best. We all are going to miss him. Good Luck always - Zeke - until we meet again. Bill Harris February 15 - 2002 I didn't know Don as a cadet except in passing and through seeing him in the ring. He sure "fought the good fight" there as he did throughout his years. Be at peace - Zeke. Walt McCrillis February 19 - 2002 Zeke - the quiet one - sadly was not often seen at the gatherings of the Class - but how enjoyable an occasion it was if he was to make the affair. The memories that I have of Zeke at school were the times that we would by chance meet when he was making his way toward the 1st Regt. from boxing practice during those dark - dreary days of winter. No matter the weather - nor his temperment at the time - nor any of the hundred things that filled our minds - Zeke always had the time and the good attitude to stop and spend a few moments visiting and spreading his own kind of humor--very subtle - as I remember. We lost a true jewel with Zeke; may he rest in peace - Well Done. Chuck Roades February 22 - 2002 I greatly appreciated Zeke's help in surviving our USMA German course - especially the "light" Technical German part. (Probably - our joint tutoring sessions were mutually helpful.) We last met during our class reunion in 1980 - but - in missing more recent get-togethers - I also missed his contact. I was deeply saddened upon hearing about his death in February. My sincere condolences are extended to his family. John Gamble June 19 - 2002 Zeke was a terror in the boxing ring. In plebe boxing - not one of my favorite sports - he took it easy on me. As a company mate - he was one of the kindest persons I know - always understanding of other people's feelings. Sadly - but proudly - I submit that he is a wonderful addition to the Long Gray Line. John E. Rudzki - Jr. June 29 - 2002 |
