Down in the trenches

He was not the quarterback who threw for a 70 percent completion average. He was not the halfback who ran for 160 yards a game. He was the man down in the trenches who made it possible for those others to accomplish the things they did.

Godwin Ordway enterd the United States Military Academy on 29 June 1951. He became a member of the varsity football team. A team which had been decimated of its entire squad in an unheard of scandal. Coach Earl Blaik - took the material he had and molded it into the best that he could. Coach Blaik saw weaknesses and he used the talent available to fill those weaknesses. Coach Blaik saw a talent in Godwin Ordway and for the next three years - Godwin played center - tackle and end. His first class year - Godwin played tackle - a position at which he excelled. His ability helped put Army in a position of contender for the national championship.

Potential All Americans get noticed in their sophmore and junior years. Switching positions - Godwin Ordway did not have that advantage. He played where the coach wanted him to play. Had Godwin been able to play one position - he would have been noticed.

Godwin Ordway is an All American - a soldier - a classmate - friend and companion.

He is the

Ski and I did not know each other very well until later in life. Of course I knew who he was due to his wonderful contribution to Army Athletics. That acquaintenship changed to friendship and love following the mini-reunion in Colorado Springs. I received a letter from Ski following that mini dated 2 September 1993. In that letter Ski spoke most eloquently and tenderly of "a celebration of the human spirit" that he saw in Bobbie and me. You cannot imagine the depth of feeling that big lug of a football player conveyed. He quoted from one of his uncles' diary the following which he carried with him: "It is the test alone that establishes the worth: no one untried is ever worthy." During Ski's illness the best I could do was return a copy of the letter to him with my own feeble attempt to indicate how much it had meant to me. Ski was tried many times - met every test - and established his worth.

Be at peace - dear friend. Well done!

If anyone is grateful for Ski's football ability - it is I. Ski played in front of me for 3 years. He lead by example. He was the toughest player pound for pound that I have ever known. He handled opposing linemen that were 20 or 30 + pounds heavier - with a quickness and sheer determination. Most of my running success can be attributed to Ski's explosive blocking up front. We'll miss you good friend and may you rest in peace.

I had the opportunity to get to know Ski while I was the manager of the baseball team for a couple of years. Ski - Rich(team captain) - Todd - and lots of others made that a great time to include the practices and the games. Ski played baseball just like he did football-to win. We were playing at one of the Ivy League colleges when Ski hit an in-the-park home run to win the game in the 10th inning-the catcher who tried to block home plate will always remember Ski's flying approach and the catcher's removal. I was assigned to the 3d Armored Division in 1957-60 when Ski played for and helped coached the "Mainz Troopers" in the 8th Infantry Division - which included some great football players who came to Germany with the 504 Abn and the 505 Abn from Ft. Bragg. Ski represented to me what a great Infantry - Airborne - Ranger - West Point Officer should be! Regret that Henry and I have never met Ute-we wish her the best during this difficult time.

We are all surprised and saddened by Ski's passing. Our hearts go out to Uta. He was such a vital and wonderful man that it is hard to accept that he is no longer with us. When Ski first came to Colorado we had a chance to enjoy good times together as he searched for a job and demonstrated his ability to ski down the mountain. After he settled in Monument we had the not frequent enough occasions to go to the mountain with him. We always looked forward to his company - his pleasant smile - easy way with kids and unfailing willingness to help whenever he could. His loss will leave a hole in our hearts - but wonderful memories of a great guy. May he rest in peace.

My friendship with Ski goes back to Prep School days at Stewart Field,NY. It was there that I was really impressed with this great person who had a smile and a hearty greeting for everyone he met. We hit it off right from the first meeting. The Academy years were made more enjoyable - more valuable with the friendship of such a 110% person who did his best at everything he undertook. He learned from that experience and took away all the subtle lessons he learned and turned them into teaching methods to be used in future days as a brilliant coach and officer in the Army. It was a unique pleasure to watch him work with those he coached and to come to the realization that he was that way with he was with everyone he knew. I never encountered Ski in later life that I didn't come away with the feeling that I had been in the presence of a genuinely superb individual. We'll all miss you - Ski - but we will never - ever forget you.

Godwin Ordway - or Ski as all his friends called him - and I met at Stuart Field 53 years ago. And as luck would have it we both played on the Army Prep School Football team there. Ski played end and I played tackle. These days they call them wide receivers. What great times we had - especially the trip to Bermuda to play the Air Force Base team. I don't remember whether we won orlost but what a fine time Ski - I and the rest of the team had. But I do know Ski was a winner then as he was during life. Fare well good friend and be thou at peace.

I didn’t get to know Ski really well until a couple of years after graduation. We were both in the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg. As typical young bachelors we were constantly on the quest for a party or female companionship. A memorable plan of action was to take space available military air to Bermuda in time for college week. We managed to get there and have a ball in spite of mostly rainy weather and being one week early for the college spring break activities.

I didn’t run into Ski again until several years later in Vietnam. In the early years there were not a lot of U.S. troops in country – mostly advisors. Traveling down an unfamiliar road with my Vietnamese unit we decided to stop at a local Advisory Compound for travel advisories – who should come to the door – Ski! It turned out that he was stationed in the same area and we got together frequently after that. The most memorable occasion was the visit by three professional football players on a tour to cheer up the troops. I will never forget sitting in awe at the bar listening to Ski and the famous Johnny Unitas the greatest pro quarterback in football) talk football and play liars dice. They were both having such a good time that they almost missed their flight back to Saigon.

I’ll remember Ski as a football play - infantryman and most of all a cheerful and fun companion. Whenever I thank back on the old times - I can’t help but get a smile on my face.

I did not know Ski well but I will always remember an incident on the cow trip when Ski and a couple of other of our larger classmates came to the aid of Don Gransback and myself. The powers that be required all cadets to wear whites to go into town. There was a navy installation nearby and we all knew the whites would be a negative attention getter. As Don and I were returning to the busses the heckling from the sailors got worse. Finally - Don could not take it any more. He beckoned to the largest of the drunken swabbies to come forward. Don hit him square in the face and the blood started gushing. (I still have the white trousers with the blood stains) I took Don's back just as the other sailors started to encircle us. Ski and the others saw what was about to happen and came running to our defense. Needless to say the crowd dispersed. For that brotherly kindness - and many other things you have done - thank you Ski. Rest in peace while you wait for the rest of us to join you and the others.

Being a runt - I did not have a lot of contact with Ski - but we did work together at Buckner and I thoroughly enjoyed my association with him. We sat at "Corp Squad tables together - and I know of no finer gentleman and classmate. My best to his family. Ski is in our prayers.

Folk,

After school - I came to know Ski better over the phone than I had while we were there. Oh - we all knew him at school because of all the things had accomplished and that many of you have referred to. But I got to know him better through Ute than I had before. That was because I worked in the National Military Command Center at the time and Ute was an executive assistant to the JCS J-3 and we saw each other almost daily for about seven years. She and Ski were dating and sometimes she would let me talk to him in Florida - I think it was. One time because of the com assets I had available I was able to raise his brother in a conference call to Saudi Arabia when they had a family problem. And I was always pulling for them to get married because I had such high regard for them both that I wanted that to happen. I last saw Ski when we were both in the same brigade in the Ist Cav in Viet Nam. If you had seen him then - on a weenie size firebase out nowhere - you would know that he brought with him all the attributes we all so admired at school. We have lost a star and shall miss him. And my heart-felt condolences to Ute.

I remember Ski as he used to come in from football practice - very tired after having worked hard under Earl Blaik's guidance. He was not always in the best of humor then - just tired. I know it must have been difficult for him to study under such circumstances. That he made it through four years was a tribute to the efforts he made. Bob Camp's tribute to him was justly deserved. May he rest in Peace with all the others of the Long Grey Line. He was a great company mate and a great guy. God bless you Ski from all the Company B-1 guys!

I was never fortunate enough to have served with Ski - but he was always a great guy.

May all his family receive the blessings and peace from the Good Lord.

In the lives we lived together - Ski was a classmate - a teammate - a professional colleague - and a beloved companion at every class reunion. His whole demeanor spoke friendship. I would have felt privileged if we were brothers - and I treasured him as a friend. He will be in my memory forever. We had not seen each other for two years - so we exchanged letters when his last ordeal began. I miss him.

Ski Ordway was laid to rest in Fort Logan National Cemetery yesterday - 22 April 2003 - after a beautiful funeral mass and reception - at their parish church in Monument - CO. Our Class wreath and spray was prominent among the many floral tributes.

His wife - Ute - asked that I send her sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all who called - sent cards and letters - and who kept Ski in their prayers.

In attendance with hundreds of friends and relatives - were the following members of the Class of '55 : Dick Auer - Quent and Anna Bates - Dick and Sally Bean - Fred and Dorothy Bliss - Rich and Inez Cardillo - John Feagin - Pete Fikaris - Jack and Susan Griggs - Todd and Sue Graham - Charlie Johnson - John and Erma Martling - John McGinn - Paul Parks - Tom Wilkinson - and Bill Wyman.

Dear Ute:

I bet you won't believe it - but just today I found out Ski's passing away. It was for me a great surprise when Bill Welter sent to me the list of the deceased for this year - and I saw his name. I imediately tried to find out how he died - but I only saw a report that said that early April 11 he had passed away - and then I read Bob Camp's Eulogy - which was beautiful. I met Ski at the Point - in the way of saying that I knew who he was - since he was well known because of his football ability. He probably never knew who I was - however there is hardly any classmate who became as warm and as interested as him about the work I was and I'm doing. I have here in front of me his last letter dated Nov.12 - 2002 - where he encourages me to keep going. Once we talked by phone. He called me all the way to Mexico. He was so close - so warm - a great person. However - I experience him extremely close - since He is with the Lord - and the Lord is always with me. This same afternoon I'll offer mass for him; however I know he dosesn't need my prayers - just the opposite - he - I'm sure - is praying for me and my work. I would have loved to celebrate mass for him at his funeral. I went once to Washingon D.C. to celebrate it for Dave Burroughs - It was a great experience. I was extremely emotional to be in those circumstances among so many classmates. Ute - please accept my apologies for being so late in getting in touch with you - but believe me that for Ski it hasn't being late since all these months have been a second for him.

May the Lord bless you always.
