I served with George in the 28th United States Infantry Regiment in the late 50's. George was a quiet spoken - very serious officer - although sometimes we could make him crack up at some jokes. I guess that's what made him such an interesting guy--it was always difficult to read him and then when you thought you had George all figured out and you were ready to break the mold - a new side of him would appear. We had - in the 28th - the Muddlers Award given each week to the officer(usually junior) who made the biggest goof or screwup. The award was a wooden paddle the the "winner" had to carry around everywhere during the week. I don't recall if George ever "won" the Muddlers Award but I think I knew him well enough to say that had he "won" he would have been extremely embarrassed. In spite of his shy smile I know that his "winning" would have really gnawed at him mercilessly. As you can guess - George didn't like to screw up - nor did he very often! Well done George....Rest in peace. Dave Patton April 21 - 2004 |
