Billy Ed Grimmett, class of 1951 graduate, joined the United States Air Force December 12,
1952. Between the years of 1952 and 1973, he served at seven different bases in the
United States, several bases overseas, as well as a tour in Vietnam. During his Vietanam
service, he received the Air Force Comendation Medal, the First Oak Leaf Cluster, and a
Purple Heart. After retiring in 1973, he moved back to Stamps and started another career
buying and selling timber for a wood company. After doing this for several years the
“call for uniforms and service for others” made him decide to go into law enforcement.
He served as the City Marshall of Stamps as well as a Lafayette County Deputy for seven
years before running for Sheriff. He served as the Lafayette County Sheriff for 4 years. Starting in 1989, dad decided to farm, drive a school bus, and just spend time doing the things he loved and being with his family. His four granddaughters thoroughly enjoyed “papppaw” always being around to spoil them. Dad suffered a heart attack and died in January 1992. You all have heard the Reba McEntire song, “The Greatest Man I never Knew”, well my dad was the “GREATEST” man I have ever known! Anita Grimmett Fleming (daughter). |
