Kie was born in Maine on 27 December 1927. He entered the West Point with a presidential pointment and in spite of the usual scrapes with the academic and tactical departments, he duated and joined the Anti-aircraft artillery. He attended the basic course at the Artillery School and later joined the 107th Field Artillery Battalion in the 28th Division in Europe. While there Kie met and married Brigitte in 1956. After his return to the states he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Artillery at Fort Benning and in 1958, He attended the Artillery Advanced course at Fort Sill and Fort Bliss. In 1963, Kie served in Korea with the 15th Artillery Battalion, 2nd Division and upon his return he was assigned to the 83rd Artillery Battalion. In addition to the units above, Kie served in a number of units that were activating and deactivating as the Field Artillery was restructuring. These included the activation of an Honest John Rocket unit and a Lacrosse Guided Missile Kie resigned in 1966 as a Major. ­

Following retirement, Kie joined the Reserves and worked for the Army Material Command and later the Army Electronics Immand. He kept active in the reserves and was named as an honor graduate of the Command & General Staff College course 1973. He later entered the 79th Army Reserve Command as Assistant G-l and an assistant G-4. In 1981, Kie moved to Amelia unty, Virginia and joined the 80th Division (Training) and served as Assistant Brigade Commander, Assistant G-3 and sistant G-2 until he retired from the military and civil service.

Kie and Brigitte lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia on a 110 acre farm for many years before moving again to the shore near Chincoteague. They have 4 children and 4 grandchildren.
