Don Anker departed West Point with a new car and a new diploma
to start a new career as an Artillery Officer at Fort Sill. After
assignments to Ft. Hood and Alaska, he was assigned
to Fort Bliss. While there, he met his future bride, Bobbi. A
year later they were married. Two weeks after the wedding, he
was on his way to Korea. Bobbi joined him in Japan, and their
first son was born there. He served a three-year instructor tour
at WEst Point in the MT&G/ES&GS Department. Two more children
were born whle they were stationed at West Point. After another
assignment to Fort Sill, they went to Germany. He joked that they
did not bring home a German Shepherd or a grandfather's clock,
but they did bring home another son. After an assignment to Fort
Knox, he was sent to Vietnam, in the Central Highlands with the
4th Infantry Division. He returned to Ft. Sil again and elected
to retire three years later. It was time to start a new career,
so he bought the General Business Services franchise and spent
27 satisfying years as his own boss.
He worked as a volunteer with West Point Admissions , assisting 80 young people in starting their West Point/Army careers. Both he and Bobbi spent many years volunteering in the Army community and at home. He spent many years as a Scoutmaster and was on the District Executive Board. He was the President of the Bay City Rotary Club and has done fund-raising for the local hospital and other community activities.
