- We of L-1 have no common origin, but came to West Point from twelve
states and three countries of Central America. United we weathered the
storms of plebe year and united we have been able to overcome the
difficult obstacles placed before us by the Tactical and Academic
Departments. Of course our four years had their lighter moments. We shall
long hold memories of the 39th casino of Danny, Purdy and Dumbo, the
Dawson study hall, and Earl Red Michels' Rabble. We of '51 worked hard but
we played hard and usually we tried to combine the two. Our individual
interests were wide in scope. Chapy ran the forum, Peifer was a hood,
Smithy and Vince dreamed of Florida, Jimenez learned English, Clyde
mothered the Rabble, Carlos shined his brass, Freddie worked crossword
puzzles, John dreamed of Texas, T. J. handled company finances, Willie led
cheers for the Black Knights, Joe broadcasted sports, Moon ran the
company. Yes, we shall long remember our days in L-1.

Still serving as the chairman of our water and sanitation district. We live at 6200' in a high altitude
desert and all the district’s deep pumps will eventually run dry so we are developing new sources
that hopefully will be renewable and affordable. Fascinating working on a team trying to achieve
a meaningful legacy. In February Mary Ann and I took a cruise from Buenos Aires around Cape Horn to Valpariso. Nice
change and since it is hard for me to walk due to arthritis I could stay aboard an enjoy the sea air
