Born 6 Oct 1926, the 7th of 13 children
and grew up on family farms near Rochester, MN. Graduated HS
at 15, started college at 16, enlisted at 17, commissioned a
2LT Inf, via Ft. Benning OCS at 18, to Far East at 19, served
as Plt Ldr, Co Comdr, & Regt'l S-4, resigned as 1LT to enter
West Point competitively from the Army at 20, Married Jean Sheffield
in Ridgewood NJ on 6 Jun 1951. Blessed with 4 sons and 9 grandchildren.
Selected CE as branch choice and after
Officer Basic was assigned to 118th Engr Combat Bn in Germany
and spent the bulk of his time there CO of A Co. Resigned from
the Regular Army in 1954. Worked in Industrial Management as
a Plant Manager, VP of two machine-building companies, then as
Pres. of his last employer's company
In 1975 bought a 125-acre farm between
Dayton and Cincinnati, and moved there in 1981. Became very involved
in the breeding, raising, training, hunting and competitive events
in horses.
Delmar wrote "I have had the stroke
of luck to ride the Army mules, Hatsushimo ["First Frost",
Emperor Hirohito's white Arabian stallion...], and an Army Pentathlon
Team horse. They were at West Point during our Plebe Year. Since
they then moved, we may be the last class to have a member ride
in the Riding Hall."
