Personal Homepages and Permanent Mailing Address

Why pay an ISP to host your web site when WP-ORG offers you that for free?

Changing e-mail addresses frequently?  Try WP-ORGs permanent e-mail address and get the following benefits:

  • A permanent e-mail address based on your Cullum number.  You never have to send out notices that your e-mail address is changing ever again.
  • Forwarding capability to your current address.  You can tell family, friends, business contacts, etc., your WP-ORG address and any mail sent there will be immediately forwarded to your current address.
  • Full POP3 access.  The WP-ORG address can act as a standard e-mail account instead of simply forwarding e-mail like others that are available (e.g., AOG and MilMail).  A major benefit to this is that it can be set up to store mail during extended absences from the net (e.g., when you change ISPs or jobs but there are 4 or 6 weeks in-between where you do not have any e-mail address to forward to).

WP-ORG offers its members a free Web Hosting Service.   You may link to your existing home page or use the space provided by WP-ORG.

The URL to a personal homepage is based on Year Group and Cullum number. and will look something like this:

    http://www.west-point.org/users/usma1964/25244/
The URL above is for Jack Price whose Cullum number is 25244 and a graduate of the Class of 1964.

For those Year Groups that are supported by WP-ORG, the personal homepages are preloaded for convenience.  Given the year group and Cullum number, you can descern the URL and check out a site place holder.

The personal homepage at WP-ORG can be used for anything. We trust (in the spirit of cooperate and graduate) that you will use the resource wisely, practically, tastefully, and legally. In other words, you can use the site to post your resume, set up commercial interests, do it for fun, etc. ... (just a list of examples).  WP-ORG won't even consider "censorship" unless you engage in very very bad things (i.e., hate, anti-social activities, civil-disobidience, etc.).

Additionally, the personal homepages hosted at WP-ORG will not be obligated to have the WP-ORG banner (or any of its sponsors). The only way that visitors would know that you are using WP-ORG would be through the URL. Other than that ... do what you want.

When using WP-ORG as a hosting site, you can publish your content using the following methods:

  • Use Netscape 3.02 Gold or better and utilize the Publish feature.
  • FTP to WP-ORG
Basically, you can "author" your homepage remotely at the privacy of your home and on your personal and designated time.

Permanent Mailing Address
The idea of a personal Email address which will never change throughout your life, is appealing to anyone who has gone through Compuserve, AOL, and a couple of different Internet Service Providers in the last several years.

Both AOG and WP-ORG have responded with slightly different solutions to the problem.  WP-ORG's address is based on the Cullum number and will look like this:  wp25244@west-point.org    (For Jack Price, whose Cullum number is 25244)  Since internet addresses are not case sensitive, WP25244@West-Point.org will work equally well. The same person will have priceJ64@aog.usma.edu in the format used by AOG.  (First five letters of surname, first initial, year, and then @aog.usma.edu)

The value of having a permanent Email address for personal records, stationery, business cards, professional registrations, and legal documents, is considerable.  The addition of having West Point in that address makes this a very attractive option.

A permanent email address is done through Email to Email Forwarding.  WP-ORG forwards email from your wpXXXXX@west-point.org address to another address. This is a great service for those that are establishing WP-ORG as a permanent email address but still receive email at another address. Your WP-ORG email can be forwarded to any email address including AOL, Compuserve, MSN, and Internet Service Provider (ISP) accounts.

WP-ORG is also offering a fully operational POP3 service, using the connection provided by Northwest Link.  A POP3 service or mailbox lets you retrieve email from our servers using any standard Internet Email software such as:

  • Netscape Mail or Communicator
  • Microsoft Internet Mail, Outlook, or Exchange
  • Eudora Lite or Pro
  • Pegasus
  • Any others that support POP3!
