About the speaker:  Captain Scotty Smiley, a Ranger and combat-diver qualified infantryman, is the Army’s first active-duty, blind officer and its first blind company commander. On April 6, 2005, he lost use of both eyes when a suicide car bomber blew himself up thirty meters in front of Scotty’s Stryker vehicle. Since that day, Scotty Smiley has surfed in Hawaii, skied in Vail, skydived, climbed Mount Rainier, completed a triathlon, and graduated with an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. The Army Times named Captain Smiley its Soldier of the Year in 2007. In 2008 he won an ESPY as the world’s Best Outdoor Athlete. Scotty, a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, recently taught the core course in leadership at West Point and commanded the Warrior Transition Unit at West Point’s Keller Army Medical Center. Captain Smiley was also named a recipient of the Army's prestigious MacArthur Leadership Award.  See more information about Scotty at the links below:

West Point Night at the Stars

E-mail Print PDF

Our next social gathering will be on August 25th when we will assemble to watch the Huntsville Stars play the Birmingham Barons at Joe Davis Game time is 1843. More details to follow.

Also on a good note, last night the Milwaukee Brewers (parent club of the Stars) signed their number one pick, Jed Bradley, son of my classmate Will and his lovely wife Lori Ann. With a bit of luck, Jed may be on the roster that week.

This will be a totally informal event, not much required except that you show up. We wont have a block of pre purchased tickets as seating is plentiful and tickets are cheap, especially if you have any kind of military id.

Mark the date; more info coming next week.

Sincerely,

Bill Crawford
Party Sergeant

A Call for Donations to the 2011 Founder’s Day Silent Auction

A Call for Donations to the 2011 Founder’s Day Silent Auction

As we all know, the Academy is not funded solely by federal tax dollars. While the Academy's core academic, military, and physical development programs receive federal support, many projects and activities that are of great value but outside the "core" designation receive minimal or no funding from the government.  Thus, external fundraising efforts are important factors in the Academy's ability to maintain the excellence of its military, academic, and physical education programs.

In an effort to contribute to the Long Grey Line, and to further our aim to “Invest in the Future”, the West Point Society of the Tennessee Valley will appoint a committee to select a cadet activity each year to be the annual focus of all  fund raising activities.  The selected activity will be announced each year at Founders Day.  This year's selected activity is the Sprint Football team.  To kick off 2011 fund raising for the Sprint Football Team, we are holding a silent auction at the Founder’s Day celebration on Friday, March 25th.  We are asking for donations of items from any and all society members.  The possibilities for such donated items are limitless.....any unwanted West Point memorabilia, gift cards to favorite restaurants, spas, or salons, rounds of golf at a local club, tickets to sporting events, etc.  We are just asking that the donated item have a minimum value of $25.

There are three points of contact for the silent auction:
                                                     Bill Crawford 256 975 3610
                                                     Julie Wilhelm 256 885 1925
                                                     Lynne Warnke 256 885 0463

Donated items can be dropped off with any above POCs or they will gladly come and pick up the donated item from your home or work place.  Whatever is easiest for you!

Donated items will be accepted starting now and will be accepted through March 18th

Please help donate to this silent auction and make it an even more enjoyable Founder’s Day!  We appreciate all your help.
