Taps . . .

A Feature of WPSST in Connection with WPAOG and WP-ORG

Immediate Notification of the Deaths of West Point Graduates Worldwide

This list is a collaborative effort between AOG and WP-ORG.  Death notifications are currently sent to class lists and to the Society where the decedent lived.  Until now, graduates who were not either a member of a decedent’s class or society did not receive timely notification of a death.  Therefore, the purpose of this list is to give society members worldwide timely notification of all graduates’ deaths so that members can attend the funeral or send condolences in a timely fashion.  WPSST will continue to transmit notifications of society deaths by email message (Be Thou at Peace) and will maintain this site for other notifications.

For further information on the death announcement, please contact AOG (Joel Jebb or Patty Pfanzelter) at 845-446-1614.  Please forward all notifications of the death of a graduate to:  Taps-owner@west-point.org

TAPS - LTC (R) Robert L. Korchek, D-560L_________________

LTC (R) Robert L. (Bob) Korchek, D-560L, a member of Chapter
XXXIII, Special Forces Association, suffered a debilitating stroke in
late January and passed away in Hospice in Spartanburg, SC on Tuesday,
February 2, 2010.  He was 81 years old.

A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Bob started his
military career by following in his fatherâ?Ts and grandfatherâ?Ts
footsteps and enlisting in the US Marine Corps at the end of WWII.
Demobilized in 1946, he applied for entrance to the United States
Military Academy at West Point, entering the academy in 1947 as a
member of the Class of 1951 where he later achieved the distinction of
being the class â?oGoat.â?  He initially served in the 511th AIR of the
11th Abn Div, but, along with most of the Class of â?T51, he was
immediately shipped to the war in Korea, serving with the 7th Inf
Regt, 3rd Inf Div for 15 months as a Platoon Leader and Company
Commander.  Returning to the States, Bob attended the regular Army
schools and then served in the 505th AIR, 82nd Abn Div for three years
as a Bn S-1 and Company Commander.

In 1958 Bob joined Special Forces, serving in the 77th (later
the 7th) SFG(A) as an A Team Leader.  While assigned to the 77th, he
served his first of two tours with the WHITE STAR MTT in Laos.  He
next served in the 1st SFG(A) for four years as an A Team Leader and
on the Group S-3 staff, where he once again deployed to the WHITE STAR
MTT in Laos.  Later SF assignments included one year on the
USMACV(SOG) staff; service as an Instructor in the Officerâ?Ts Special
Forces Qualification Course; and a year as the S-3 of the 46th SF Co
(A) in Thailand.

Returning from Thailand, Bob immediately deployed overseas
again: this time to Panama where he served three years as the
Commander of A Company and as the Group Deputy Commander.  While
commanding Company A, he earned the  nickname â?oThe Rockâ? because he
was fondly known as a hard, demanding, firm but fair commander.  He
carried this nickname with him until he retired from the Army.  His
last assignment was to the Special Warfare Center where he served as
the Course Director for the Enlisted Special Forces Qualification
Course.

LTC Korchek was the recipient of numerous awards and
decorations for both valor and service.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Annemarie; a daughter,
Lori; and four step children: SSG Thomas P. Cronin, Tina, John and
Rheinhart.

The family plans a small and private memorial service in
Spartanburg on late Wednesday afternoon (exact time yet TBD), February
10, 2010 at Bob and Annemarieâ?Ts residence.  Bobâ?Ts remains have been
cremated and will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a
later (TBD) date.

Condolences may be sent to Bobâ?Ts widow and family at:   400
Webber Road, Apt C2
-4, Spartanburg, SC 29307-2473; telephone
864-579-3812.

> Lieutenant General James Hollingsworth

>
> San Antonio Express-News

> Retired Lt. Gen. James F. Hollingsworth, a highly decorated Army
officer once called "the most courageous and battle-effective general
our national has ever known." has died. The San Antonio resident served
in World War II and the Korea and Vietnam War. He was the most decorated
officer in Texas A&M University's history and a statue of him sits on
the campus Quadrangle.

Frances Hollingsworth; and nieces and nephews.

>
>
> By Elaine Ayala - Express-News
> Retired Lt. Gen. James F. Hollingsworth, by many accounts the most
decorated military officer ever to come out of Texas A&M University, has
died.
>
> A San Antonio resident for the past 18 years, Hollingsworth, 91, died
Tuesday.
>
> He was in the Army for 36 years and served during World War II, Korea
and Vietnam. The three-time recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross
also received four Distinguished Service Medals, four Silver Stars,
three Legion of Merit medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross three times
over, the Soldier's Medal, four Bronze Stars and a remarkable 38 Air
Medals, among many others.
>
> Wounded in combat during World War II, Hollingsworth also received six
Purple Hearts. He retired in 1976.
>
> “Gen. Hollingsworth was unquestionably one of the most distinguished
military officers ever produced by Texas A&M,” the university's
president, R. Bowen Loftin, said through the school's communications
department. “A statue honoring him has been prominently placed in the
Corps of Cadets quad, where thousands of current and former students
have seen it and been inspired by the all-too-brief account of his long
and valiant service to his country.”
>
> Dedicated in 1999, the bronze statue is in the A&M Quadrangle.
University officials likened the scene of its dedication — before a
sea of cadets — to Gen. George Patton addressing troops in the movie
“Patton.”
>
> The statue bears the inscription “Danger 79er,” Hollingsworth's
radio call sign for more than 20 years. At its dedication, officials
noted that Hollingsworth's statue is larger than Patton's at West Point
by 3 feet.
>
> Hollingsworth, who started as a platoon leader in the Second Armored
Division under Patton, rose to lead a regimental-size armored task
force.
>
> Born in Sanger, just north of Denton, on the family farm,
Hollingsworth was the oldest of four sons; his brothers followed him
into the military.
>
> “He was a wonderful, wonderful man,” said his wife, Janie
Hollingsworth, who was his executive secretary at the Pentagon for a
brief time. “He was a marvelous, marvelous husband and very, very good
to me.”
>
> They were married for close to 20 years.
>
> “Gen. Hollingsworth wasn't just a soldier,” said Dionel Avilés,
a Texas A&M University System regent. “He was a warrior.”
>
> “He always took care of his troops. He reminded you of Gen. George
Patton in that respect,” Avilés said. “His service in Vietnam was
probably his most distinguished.”
>
> In that war, Hollingsworth defied orders not to defend U.S. troops
from fire coming across the Cambodian border. He took responsibility for
that decision. Later, the policy was reversed. He also was instrumental
in the Battle of Saigon.
>
> In World War II, he was involved in seven major campaigns from North
Africa to Berlin.
>
> In Korea, he was the commanding general, reportedly leading the
larg-est combat field army — 13 divisions — in the world.
>
> In 1980, Texas A&M named him a Distinguished Alumnus. Fourteen year
later, he was inducted into the Corps of Cadets Hall of Honor.
>
> “He was revered by his troops and feared by the enemy as a warrior
who was always on the scene in times of need or at times of immense
peril,” the plaque on the statue reads, “A role model and a
motivator to all who knew and loved him. A great Texas Aggie!”
>
> Hollingsworth, who died of natural causes, will be buried May 20 at
Arlington National Cemetery.

Jack - I had a very good friend from the class of '56.  When I went out to the Memorial Service for Barry Zwick, I stayed with him on Friday night.  He was quite sick and was hospitalized.  He died on on Tuesday, the 17  of Aug at about 1930.  His name was John (Jack) Raymond Bray Jr Cullum #20742.  His son is a WP graduate Cullum #39121, but I don't think he would have a  classmate of Jack's to put the word out.  Can you get AOG to put it out?  I have all the details, if the wanted to contact me and I have the next of kin (two sons and one daughter) as well.  His wife has Alzheimer's and is in the hospital  at Riverside Village in Riverside CA.  They can call me at 703-569-2292 or my cell at 703-851-0515.  Thanks,
