MINUTES
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
27 August 2001
1. ATTENDANCE. The Board of Directors of the West Point
Society of South Texas (WPSST) met at the home of Mike and
Patty Thuss, 13706 Bluffmount and convened at 1945 hours.
Present and constituting a quorum were Barth, Best, Betts,
Bivens, Coonan, Foreman, Harris, M. Hogan, R. Hogan,
Koehler, Marshall, Prewitt-Campbell, Schulz, and Thuss.
2. SECRETARY'S REPORT. (Koehler '76) The Minutes of the
23 April 2001 and 21 May 2001 Board Meetings were
submitted. Resolved (Bivins/Schulz) to accept the Minutes
as published. Approved unanimously.
3. TREASURER'S REPORT. (Schultz '49) The Reports for 21
May 2001 and 27 August were submitted. Resolved
(Marshall/M. Hogan) to accept the Treasurer's Report as
published. Approved unanimously.
4. COMMITTEE REPORTS:
ADMISSIONS: (Reported by Griffin '58). The Class of
2005 includes 12 cadets from the San Antonio area, and all
12 are in attendance. During the week of 24 - 27 September
the area school districts will host College Nights. 14
October is the West Point Orientation at the BAMC Hospital
Auditorium. 15 October is a workshop and luncheon for area
guidance counselors.
MEMBERSHIP: (Reported by Foreman '81). The database
includes 725 graduates eligible for membership. 216 are
paid members. The goal is to increase members by 10 % to
238. Foreman is making telephonic contact with all
graduates moving to the San Antonio area, and making them
aware of the WPSST.
PROGRAMS: (Reported by Barth '70).
a. Members' Appreciation "Benny Havens Hour" on 21
September 2001. It will be held from 1700 - 1930 hours at
the Fort Sam Houston Golf Course Banquet Room. It will
include free "heavy" appetizers, sodas, beer, and wine; a
cash bar will be available.
b. Founders Day 2002. The location and menu have
been finalized. Investigating the possibility to have a
virtual feed of the West Point Founders Day Ceremony at
West Point. Additionally, looking at identifying the guest
speaker and honored guest to invite.
c. 3 November 2001. Tentatively, plan on a
function at Retama Park from 1800-2100.
d. 1 December 2001. Tailgate Party in conjunction
West Point Parents' Club prior to the Army-Navy Game at the
Airport Hilton Hotel Sports Bar.
e. 25 January 2002. Annual Membership Meeting.
f. 16 March 2002. Founders Day.
g. 17 May 2002. Luncheon with the topic TBD.
PUBLIC RELATIONS: (Reported by M. Hogan '81).
Submitted the required information to West Point for the
2001 Distinguished Society Award. Received a streamer for
winning the 2000 Distinguished Society Award.
5. OLD BUSINESS:
a. Networking Breakfast. Robin Hogan '85 discussed
the monthly Networking Breakfasts held in June, July, and
August. The next Networking Breakfast will be held on
Tuesday, 11 September at 0630 hours at Mama's Café (281
North and Bitters Road).
b. Bicentennial Committee. Dan Coonan '66 reported
that Acceptance Day started the celebration. Roy Greene
represented the WPSST. The committee is looking at media
opportunities to publicize the Bicentennial. Plan to
publish a plan and brief the Commander, Fifth U.S. Army.
6. NEW BUSINESS: Todd Foreman discussed the American Red
Cross Adopt-a-Shelter Program. The Red Cross is seeking
trained volunteers to operate emergency shelters in the
event of a disaster. The shelter would be operational for
72 hours, and 10 volunteers would be needed to man each
shelter. Todd requested the WPSST sponsor a shelter. It
was decided that Todd would brief the membership at the
Membership Appreciation function on 21 September to gauge
interest for this project.
7. The meeting adjourned (Best/Prewitt-Campbell) by
unanimous consent at 2055 hours.
The next WPSST Board of Directors Meeting will convene at
1900 hours on 22 October at location TBD.
