Lieutenant Colonel James M. Ingalls
USMA 1954

LTC James M. Ingalls, USAF (Ret), age 69, of San Antonio, died Tuesday, October 5, 1999. He was a West Point graduate of 1954 and an avid outdoorsman. LTC Ingalls was a veteran of the Vietnam War as a Skyraider pilot of the "Sandy" Rescue Teams, which specialized in rescuing downed pilots. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Combat Action after being shot down himself and successfully evading capture during several failed rescue attempts. During this time, while in the Laotian mountains he was able to direct close air support to assist the Recovery Group to his rescue. Later in his career, LTC lngalls became the Director of the US Air Force Survival Schools.
Survivors: sons, James M. Ingalls, Jr. and wife, Wendy, Germantown, TN, and Robert Charles Ingalls, San Francisco, CA; brother, Robert Alexander Ingalls, La Selva Beach, CA; sister, Margaret Grist, Palo Alto, CA; grandchildren, James III, Alexandra, Jacob and Alexander.
