Colonel Salvatore A. Armogida

Col. Sal Armogida, U.S. Army (retd.) who was born in Boston,
MA, December 9, 1912, but raised in Canton, OH, passed away
in San Antonio, TX on March 22, 2000. He graduated from the
U.S. Military Academy, West Point in 1935 and was commissioned
in the 15th Field Artillery, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Sam
Houston. In 1936, he transferred to the Corps of Engineers and
completed 30 years of service in 1965. He then joined the
County Government of San Mateo, CA and served for 13 years as
the Solid Waste Manager for the area, which included 21 cities.
Col. Armogida achieved an outstanding record of service in five
Infantry Divisions and in many engineer and logistical
assignments. Highlights of his service included commanding the
313th Engineer Combat Bn. of the 88th Infantry Division which
was designated as a 'Meritorious Service Unit'' and then the
1168thEngineer Combat Group in Italy during World War II;
Commandant of the Engineer School in Europe; Chief of the
Military Personnel Branch and later the Supply Requirements
Division in the Office Chief of Engineers; Senior Engineer
Advisor to the Second Korean Army; Assistant C.O. New York
Overseas Supply Agency and C.O. Nuremburg Post in Germany.
During the period of the build-up of the Army prior to his
combat service, Col. Armogida earned his reputation as a
superb combat engineer and as an outstanding troop leader.
At that time he, together with his family, moved frequently
commanding and training several newly activated units including
three heavy pontoon battalions and a combat engineer battalion.
His numerous military awards and citations include four Battle
Stars; the Bronze Star, two Commendation Medals; two Legions of
Merit; the French Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star and Commander
in the Order of the Crown of Italy. As the Solid Waste Manager
of San Mateo County, CA, he prepared the long-range, county wide,
disposal plan to the year 2000. The plan was adopted in 1975
by all 21 cities. It is still in effect and will continue to
be used for many years to come. He retired from County service
in 1976.Since 1987, he resided at the Army Residence Community
complex in San Antonio. As a professional engineer and solid
waste manager, he strongly advocated recyling and re-use of trash
to conserve our natural resources. He was a member of Northern
Hills Country Club, the Ft. Sam Houston Golf Club and for a
time, the A.R.C. Kiwanis Key Club. Sal is survived by his wife,
Doreen, and was preceded in death two former wives, Patricia
Lawrence and Astrid Nystedt. He is survived by his son, James
and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Armogida of Houston, TX; son,
Charles residing in Saudi Arabia; daughter, Linda and son-in-law,
Timothy Stancliffe of Boulder, CO; stepson, Robert and
stepdaughter-in-law, Jill Horn of Long Beach, CA; stepdaughter,
Janice and stepson-in-law, James Luttrell of Locust, NC; brother,
James and his wife, Velia Armogida of Canton, OH; nine
grandchildren, Steve, Jimmy and AnneMarie Armogida, Jimmy and
Jennifer Langston, Christian Armogida, Annie and Sarah
Stancliffe; and stepgrandchild, Kara Zarnoch; as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service at the Army Residence Community, 7400 Crestway,
San Antonio, will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at
10:00 A.M. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Ft. Sam
Houston National Cemetery - family only. In lieu of flowers,
donations will be very much appreciated to the Ronald McDonald
House, 4803 Sid Katz Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229. Sunset Funeral
