2009 Travis Award for Excellence

The Travis Award for Excellence

Presented to Outstanding Juniors in Public and Private Schools throughout the Coastal Empire

Application form
Deadline: Mon, Feb 02, 2009. Download background information and the 2009 Travis Award Application form . (Note: image on right is from previous form - but they are very similar).

History of the award
The Travis Award for Excellence is named in honor of two brothers, Savannah natives, Brigadier General Robert F. Travis and Colonel William L. Travis, US Military Academy classes of 1928 and 1933, respectively. The Travis brothers were both highly decorated Army Air Corps aviators during World War II who spent their lifetimes in service to their country. Travis Field in Savannah (now known as Savannah International Airport) was named for the Travis brothers in 1948. Travis Air Force Base, California, was named for Brigadier General Robert F. Travis, who was killed there in a B-29 crash in August 1950.

First presented in 1997, the Travis Award for Excellence recognizes public and private high school juniors from the Coastal Empire, who strive for excellence in all aspects of their personal lives, and who best exemplify the well-rounded qualities of candidates sought by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Eligibility
Eligibility for the Travis Award is open to all high school juniors, in public and private schools, throughout the Coastal Empire. Personal achievements in academics, leadership, athletics, and service to the community, as well as a written essay and interview are the basis for final award selection.
Award committee
An Award Committee consisting of members of the West Point Society of Savannah reviews all of the submitted applications and selects finalists. Each finalist appears before an Interview Board for a short interview regarding accomplishments, values and goals. The Interview Board is made up of distinguished community leaders from Georgia ’s Coastal Empire. After the interviews, the Interview Board selects the Travis Award for Excellence winner. The 2005 winner was Corey Wheeler of Benedictine. He and his parents were guests at the 2005 West Point Founders Day Dinner. During the Dinner, he was presented with a cash award of $500; a certificate and letter of commendation, both signed by MG Leroy Suddath; and an autographed copy of Entwined Destinies.
