Entwined Destinies
"ENTWINED
DESTINIES"
paints a 200-year panoramic view of the
historical linkage between West Point and Georgia's Coastal
Empire. Historian James Mack Adams has written a definitive work
that brilliantly illuminates how these national
treasures have intersected on the historical timeline again
and again.
The West Point
Society of Savannah sponsored the publication of
Entwined
Destinies,
which was the centerpiece of its 2002
Bicentennial program. The hardbound, 232-page book carries the
reader through the colorful early history of Coastal Georgia
into defining national epochs from the founding of West Point
to major military conflicts including the present dangerous
times. The exploits and achievements in the Coastal Empire
(and around the world) of West Pointers from Georgia and
elsewhere are told in an entertaining manner. Adams’
research and narrative is thorough and very informative,
bringing together information hitherto found in many
disparate, musty journals.
Through the author’s narrative skill, one can feel the
discomfort of a young Lieutenant Robert E. Lee as he waded,
hip deep, in the marshes while siting the Savannah river
forts, or hear the cheers in Savannah’s squares as the
Confederacy is proclaimed and later taste the bitterness as
Sherman’s devastating ‘March through Georgia’ ends in
Savannah.
Easily imagined are the sounds of World War II B-17s
of the Mighty Eighth Air Force roaring over its first base in
Savannah and, from neighboring Fort Stewart, the 24
th
Infantry Division tanks clanking onto transporters en route
to Desert Storm. A good read for both the historically devoted
and the casual reader.
Author James Mack Adams is a journalist and historian who has
delighted readers of the Savannah Morning News for years with
his vivid accounts of the Coastal Empire's history. This
is his third historical work about the area.
Lieutenant General (Ret.) Dave R. Palmer, Superintendent, USMA
from 1986-1991, made this perceptive comment in the Foreward of
the book: "Readers
may be quite surprised to discover the extent and reach of
West Pointers into the very essence of this specific area of
our country. It has been significant. By extrapolating that
impact to the larger nation, it is possible to gain a sense of
the importance of graduates of West Point to the growth of the
United States itself. That, it seems to me, is the implicit
and powerful message in Adams' work."
