February Society Luncheon
Written by Kevin Robinson '99
Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:04

Our monthly luncheon will be held at 11:30 Wednesday 8 February at the Salt Grass Restaurant located at 10614 Research Blvd. Our co-speakers will be Chris Hale and LTC William Haenn USA (Ret.). Mr. Hale practices law in Austin and is the owner of Col. George Patton's quarters at Ft. Clark. He is also the father of a USNA graduate. Colonel Haenn is the father of a USMA graduate and authored the books entitled Fort Clark and Bracketville.

The topic of their lecture will be on the history of Ft. Clark, a former U.S. Army post (1852-1946) located between Uvalde and Del Rio. The discussion should prove to be both fascinating and entertaining. Ft. Clark was an active post for almost a century from the Indian War through WW II when it served as a training base for the U.S. 2nd Cavalry Division and was also the location of a German POW camp.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:02
You are invited to join the West Point Society at a fun and unique happy hour event. Mike McGovern (95) has started a great craft brewery here called Austin Beerworks . We will get a brief tour and tasting session.

Time: Thursday 16 February at 6:00 PM

Location:
3009 Industrial Terrace #150
Austin, TX 78758 (183 and Burnet Road)

RSVP: Please reply directly to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you plan to attend. I'd like to give Mike a good headcount.

Costs: Each person pays $10 for a pint glass (you get to keep it) that can then be used to sample the four brands, or a "pint or two" as Mike described it.

Unfortunately, he can't sell six packs or cases from the brewery. Might be good idea to bring cash and debit/credit card to be safe.

Follow-on Mount Bonnell Spring Clean-up
Written by Kevin Robinson '99
Wednesday, 16 March 2011 20:27

On Saturday the 5th we conducted our Mount Bonnell Spring Clean-up in conjunction with the Austin Parks Foundation's ninth annual It's My Parks Day, their signature event. Five society members participated along with 17 other volunteers. We were supported by APF, KAB and PARD and we managed to get a lot done despite a reduced number of volunteers due to the initially bad weather. We cleared brush on the summit, widened a trai...l to better access one of the picnic tables, spread crushed granite around the uppermost table, painted three metal sign posts and policed up litter on the summit and along the north trail.

You should know that having restored the fabulous views and policed the area, neighbors and visitors alike have expressed their appreciation of our Sociey's efforts.

There is more to get done, however--spread more crushed granite, weed the two gardens, paint the metal posts on the sign at the foot of the stairs, clear and bag more brush and pick up litter. So we are scheduling a follow-on clean-up day in conjunction with the Keep Austin Beautiful 26th Clean Sweep.

Please register on line and join us.

If you have any questions, call Stan Bacon at 345-5964. We will provide snacks, T shirts, water and a fabulous view from the summit along with the appropriate tools and glovess
