February 2012 Luncheon

The Ginch Boat is a'comin'

The First Savannah Crosses the Atlantic

Upcoming Events

First call for the February 2012 Luncheon. - 1130 hrs, WEDNESDAY, 22 February, The Retreat of Dunwoody.  See Log Annex for details. (NOTE CHANGED DAY!!!!!)

OK, so Gloom Period isn't so gloomy this year!

On to February:  Our speaker is Mr. John Busch.  John is no relation to the Busch's of beer fame, so don't expect any free samples!

He is, however, an expert on the Steamship Savannah, the first ship to cross the Atlantic  solely under steam power.  John will tell us about that first historic crossing, chronicled in his book, "The Steam Coffin."

Ever since Robert Fulton built his first steamboat in 1803,  such craft have been contemporaneous with our Rock-bound Highland Home!  The Clermont was the first SUCCESSFUL steamboat, plying the waters of the Hudson between NYC & Albany.

There are generations of Grads who recall the sidewheeler steamboats (Ginch Boats) that came up from NYC & either stopped at West Point, or passed by Kissing Rock & blew their whistles!

Even though Lanlubbing soldiers, we are historically  inextricably  tied to the steamboat!!!!!

Monthly Luncheon -- Jan 2012 PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 26 November 2011

Information for the January 2012 Luncheon. - 1130 hrs, Friday, 20 January, The Retreat of Dunwoody.  See Log Annex for details.

It's Gloom Period - Time to brighten up at lunch.  Oh, yes - it's DUES time again, so be prepared to pay them at the luncheon or it'll cost you Twenty Bucks to eat!

Our speaker is Col (Ret) Sam Holliday '48..
Sam just sent me some notes on what he plans to say.  It should generate some lively discussion - he is going to use Lt/Col Allen West & his conviction for mistreating a prisoner (or whatever) as a case study.  He will correlate West's situation with what he faced in Korea in 1950.

At CGSC in 1970, we discussed assassination and chemical warfare from an ethical & moral approach. Almost came to blows in my section.  (44:1 odds were pretty much a fair fight) Sam's issue is just as contentious.  Sorry, but brass knucks, cane swords, switchblades, zip guns & numchucks will be confiscated at the door.  Be prepared for a full body search if you sport a shifty look about you or unusual bulges under your coat.  Let your guilty conscience be your guide!

For questions, call Don Reinhard (404) 229-9896 (C)
