Monthly Luncheon Print
Wednesday, November 16 2005, 11:30 - 13:00 by Warren Hearnes Hits : 109

Welcome, fellow Grads, to the November, 2005 luncheon; 1130 hrs, 16 Nov at the National Museum of Patriotism. (Details at end in commercial.)

Forget all the rumors you’ve heard about who was going to speak. Lt/Gen Whitcomb was summoned by his boss for a week-long conference, so you know where we stand with respect to a 4 star. But...all is not lost.

Phil Enslow heard this great speaker extol the virtues of the 4th ID in capturing Saddam Hussein (For former Presidents who root for the Astros, it’s pernounced Sad’um; which, if you know Arabic, is supposedly some sort of insult.)

Called the potential victim this AM at about 0930, & had him hooked by Noonish. His name is Bob Babcock. Son of a RR engineer (wonder if his dad ever let him blow the whistle?), and a 1965 ROTC grad of K State (For the uninitiated, that’s the Wildcats, NOT the Jayhawks.). Bob served w/ our very own Jim Stapleton in the 4th ID in Viet Nam. Matter of fact, Bob went over w/ the 4th ID from Ft Lewis in 1966. He is an Airborne School Grad, and owns a CIB & a Bronze Star. Nothing in his Bio about a Purple Heart, so he must duck fast.

Not liking to wear uniforms, he joined IBM in 1968, (snicker, snicker) and served w/ them till he retired in 2002. (Betcha he has good enough connections to get you a great price on a Mag Card II.) Bob couldn’t get away from the US Army, and in 2002, he founded Americans Remembered, Inc., an official partner of the Veterans History Project, part of the Library of Congress. Americans Remembered focuses on preserving memories of America’s veterans and those who supported them via videotaped interviews. (This outfit interviewed my #1 Son’s father-in-law this summer at the big EAA fly-in at Oshkosh, WI. The 85 yr old gentleman flew the Hump from India to China in C-46's during WW-II.) But, I digress.

Bob has had a passion and intense focus on military history and veterans all his life. Among his accomplishments are serving as president of the National 4th Infantry Division Association and president of the 22nd Infantry Regiment Society. He is currently historian and archivist of the National 4th Infantry Division Association.

He authored a book, "War Stories – Utah Beach to Pleiku" which includes 450 personal stories from veterans of the 4th Infantry Division from 1940 to 1970. Under contract to the Army, Bob has recently completed writing the history of the 4th Infantry Division and Task Force Ironhorse in Iraq during the period April 2003-April 2004. The book, "A Year in the Sunni Triangle" was published in July 2005. His third book, "What Now, Lieutenant?" about his experiences in Vietnam will be published late this year. We will try to have copies there for you to buy, and Bob to sign.

He is also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association, and Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church.

He and his wife, Jan, have four children and two grandchildren and live in Marietta, GA. Their youngest son is a student at the University of Georgia.
