SEPT LUNCHEON: WEDNESDAY, 21 Sept; 1130 at Le Petite Auberge Restaurant.
Dear Etlanner Grads:
The speaker for this month is certifiably insane: He claims it will be an honor to address our group. Just wait'll the first tomato hits!
Well, I'll insert his formal letter of acceptance to Ken Dyson ('84; President Elect for next year).
"It would be an honor to address your group on September 21 and I appreciate you asking me. The biggest regret I have in life is not serving in my country's military. We had a wonderful opportunity to visit VMI up in Lexington, VA, on the way to Martha's Vineyard this summer, what an awesome place! VMI graduates include Stonewall Jackson and General of the Army George C. Marshall. There's an inscription on one of the buildings there from Gen. Jackson, who said this to his troops just before a major battle: 'Gentlemen, Virginia Military Institute will be heard from today.'" signed: Beau
Now, really, I did this just to impress you w/ my ability to use nested quotation marks.
Beau McClain (no relation to the senator w/ the same family name, Bo Gritz or Beau Rivage) is the Chief Assistant District Attorney for Douglas County, the last western suburb of Metro Atlanta before you drive off into terra incognita. Beau has been an Assistant District Attorney for 24 years, and specializes in prosecuting homicides, child abuse, major narcotics trafficking, and organized crime. He has prosecuted 8 capital murder cases, receiving death penalty verdicts in seven of the 8, and currently is prosecuting three death penalty murder cases in his office. (If anyone is dense enough to not interpret this, I'll do so for you - "Don't kill anyone in Douglas County.") Beau is married and the father of three sons, one of whom has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Beau served as Troop Committee Chairman and Assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 228 for 5 years, but is currently on sabbatical from Scouting while he serves as the primary lay leader of a new Anglican church in Douglas County.
Ken Dyson promises us that Beau will talk about the METH problems in our neck of the woods. They are BAD, BAD, BAD! and that is an understatement. They have migrated to our backyard from CA. That happened as soon as METH users in the rural southeast (and they exist by legions) discovered that the recipe found in "Southern Living" was amazingly easy to whomp up. Now there are "Mom & Pop" METH labs all over the place. Probably more common, and definitely more dangerous, than a good old moonshine still. Moonshine at least didn't use chemicals that are inherently explosive at the temp & pressure and exposure to ignition sources involved in METH production.
