The Things That a New Moderator Needs to Know!  

Things a new moderator will receive from WP-ORG:

 
LISTSERV
listserv name Name of your listserv, such as moderator@west-point.org
listserv passwd Password of listserv.  (Different from web-admin password).  This passwd is specific to the  given listserv.  Each listserv has a unique password.
HOMEPAGE
URL URL to homepage. 
OWNER   
Username/Passwd
List of members who has access to the web-page admin.  Typically, this is the same as the moderators of the given listserv.
Password Change at http://www.west-point.org/passwd
FTP
FTP Host Name of the FTP host for publishing.  Default is 'argon.west-point.org'
Directory Directory path to the publishing directory or location of the homepages.

 Things a new moderator needs to do immediately:

 
LISTSERV
listserv name Test the listserv to ensure that you can post to the list.
listserv passwd Change immediately.  See instructions at http://www.west-point.org/service/faq/faq/listserv-admin/
listserv intro page Change introductory statements that go out when someone joins listserv.  See instructions at http://www.west-point.org/service/faq/faq/listserv-admin/
HOMEPAGE
URL Ensure that you can access homepage.
OWNER    
Username/Passwd
Test by trying to access the homepage admin page.
Password Change at http://www.west-point.org/passwd
Publishing

The default HTML file is "index.html" 

There are several ways to publish a page: 

  1. Use Netscape publishing features.
  2. Use Netscape Composer and FTP (Requires FTP account).
  3. Use publshing programs, such as Frontpage, PageMill, etc.
  4. Use direct FTP.
  5. Telnet to host computer, which should be same as FTP Host.
  6. Hire someone.
Private domain Private domain hosting (www.yourdomain.com) is also available.  Check out the WP-ORG Virtual Domain Services.
Personal Homepage

Better known as PHP.  Read the following documentation: 

The FTP publishing directory for PHP is "/users/usmaXXXX/cullum/", where XXXX is the year group and cullum is the graduate's cullum number.  The general PHP homepage is found at  
http://www.west-point.org/users/

FTP
FTP Host Access to the FTP host is not provided automatically.  You will need to send official request to ftpusers-owner@west-point.org.  You can also visit the FTP users homepage at http://www.west-point.org/service/ftpusers/
Directory

If you do have an FTP account,  

  • test FTP login
  • ensure you can get to your directory
  • the directory is writable.
Access & Password

If you change your password using this same interface http://www.west-point.org/passwd 

You can also attempt telnet to the FTP Host and change your password through Unix.
