Class of 2017 - Yearlings PDF Print E-mail
CFT – All cadets will report back next week – June 30 or July 1. Buses are available both days to transport cadets to West Point (June 30) or to Camp Buckner (July 1).

I received a message from the cadet cadre yesterday with the following information:
No visitors and no deliveries directly to Camp Buckner during CFT. The cadets will be very busy with their training and will be spending quite a bit of time in the field.

Mail will be delivered to Camp Buckner. If you send a package, please be sure to include your cadet’s regular PO Box address, CAMP BUCKNER OR CFT on the letter/package as well as your cadet’s COMPANY assignment.

The cadets should know their company. It was assigned prior to their departure. Having the company as part of the address will be a big help to the cadre sorting the mail upon delivery to Camp Buckner.

Additionally, please be sure your cadet knows to be on the lookout for a package.

If you send food items, please be sure they are packed and sealed well. Camp Buckner has other residents during the summer (in addition to the cadets) – insects and rodents love boodle boxes!

Message sent by the Cadet cadre - “All packages and letters within the cadet's PO Box will be brought to Buckner, meaning that cadets should only ask for things from home that they are prepared to receive and be responsible for during Cadet Field Training.

Additionally, it would be a great help to the Post Office if Parents would indicate on the package that the cadet is currently at Buckner, and it would help the S1 team a great deal if they would also indicate on the package the summer company that the cadet is assigned to. That way the sorting process will be much more efficient and we will be able to get the mail to cadets as promptly as possible. The key thing is to remind parents that the mail does have to go through an extra sorting and distribution process, and therefore they should expect it to take longer for cadets to get their mail than normal.”

Details for the end of CFT award ceremony, Illumination and Run Back will be shared later.

ACCEPTANCE DAY, August 17, INFORMATION

Acceptance Day Photos...

Lastest info can be found at http://www.facebook.com/westpointparents.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. It is anticipated that the cadets (plebes) will be released to spend time with family or enjoy privileges by 1 p.m.
PLEASE check with your new cadet to find out what company they are assigned to for the Academic year.
This is the company they will march with for the parade. Please check the West Point Parent Information page for a map of the Acceptance Day parade (map... ).

Please make every effort to accommodate grandparents and elders in the bleacher area! For those in wheelchairs or portable chairs – seating along the fence line (near the baseball field and between the bleachers and Thayer statue) may be best – the latter offers a little shade.
Hats, sunscreen, water are all highly recommended.

More to come on the privileges.
If you will arrive in the area on Friday, August 16, there is a Parent Reception at the West Point Club from 4 – 6 p.m. This is a “no host” or “pay as you go” event. Beverage service will be available and the club will offer light snacks. A light menu will be available for anyone who wishes to order.
Stop by and connect with fellow Class of 2017 parents!

A-Day – August 17 is the Acceptance Day parade for the class of 2017. Cadets will get the details from West Point but historically they have been able to spend considerable time with family thru Sunday. If circumstances prevent you from travelling to West Point please let us know as we will try to include all MI cadets in off post activities. If you are going to A-Day please consider having your cadet invite someone from their squad that does not have family coming. Cadets from the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii typically cannot have families attend every event. As the cadets progress they tend to take care of including everyone themselves but a question to your cadet at this first off post event can make sure no cadet misses out.

Photos from March Back

 MARCH BACK, Monday, August 12

The Class of 2017, cadet cadre, Academy leadership, graduates, members of the 50-year Affiliation Class - 1967, staff and faculty will participate in the culminating event of Cadet Basic Training - 2013 by completing a 12 mile ruck march on Monday, August 12.
The first company of new cadets will begin their march at 4:30 a.m. stepping off from Camp Buckner, making their way through the training area.
Once all companies reach the Victor Constant Ski Slope, they will have a brief rest.
It is recommended that all family and friends be on post by 10-10:30 a.m. and in place along Washington Road.
Please refrain from trying to "find" the new cadets along the route through the training area.
As stated previously the participants will make a stop at the Victor Constant Ski Slope. They will reorganize the formation and will be joined by the West Point Band before entering via Washington Gate.
(Unless you are a grad parent participating, please make every effort to be on post in time to see the procession march down Washington Road.)
The lead company will proudly carry the banner bearing the class motto (as determined by the members of the class).
Order of the march will be shared either later this week or on Sunday evening.
However, they will also be carrying their company guidon and division affiliation flag.
The procession will finish by passing in front of the Superintendent's Quarters at approximately 11:35 a.m.

At the conclusion of the march, the new cadets will eat lunch on the apron in front of Washington Hall.
At 1 p.m., the Academic Year companies will assume command of the Class of 2017 to begin the reorganization process.
At the conclusion of the march, parents, family and friends in attendance usually watch, cheer and hold up signs for the cadets on Diagonal Walk.
PLEASE do not try to access the apron. Access to the Cadet area is not permitted at this time.
Thank you for your support!
More information/updates will be shared as necessary.

R-Day / R-Day Weekend Events

WPPC-MI will have a contact table at Eisenhower as we have had in the past so stop by and say hello. In the past West Point has published a schedule for R-Day and an example of last years can be found on the West Point website under the parent's link, class, and 2016. This is just an idea of what has been done in the past but rest assured West Point is fully prepared for this day and as we said at the picnic retail therapy opportunities abound.

The Highland Falls Community Group – Vision – is again sponsoring their Pre-R Day WELCOME reception; Sunday, June 30, 2-5 p.m. at the Thayer Hotel – on the back lawn. Light refreshments and an opportunity to meet other parents and cadet candidates. Please encourage your members to attend!
