Elizabeth Betterbed, the Deputy Brigade Commander, asks Ross Perot a question during a lecture in Jefferson Hall on Thursday. Perot was on campus to receive the Thayer Award from the West Point Association of Graduates. The Thayer Award, given annually since 1958 in honor of Col. Sylvanus Thayer, “Father of the Military Academy,” is presented to an individual who exemplifies the academy motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Part of the vision of the Board is to provide information to our members on issues that may affect our members. One issue of particular concern is H1N1 Swine Flu, and what happens if it comes back as vigorously as predicted this fall. Information is available directly from the official site for the Center for Disease Control at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/. Here you will find a Q & A section, caring for of a sick person, and facemask and respirator use.

Another issue that is affecting our community is economic recovery and how to assist those affected by loss of income. There is a central site where you can go whose mission is to “get help into people’s hands statewide.” That site is the Washington Information Network 211 (WIN 2-1-1) at http://win211.org/. This organization is “a coalition of existing local providers of information and referral services and local United Ways from every region of the state” together to provide a database containing over 6425 health and human service providers, representing 10,201 sites and more than 18,205 local services available throughout Washington to help meet your needs.

These are just a couple of sites where you can go to get needed information. We hope this information is helpful and provides you with additional resources for you and your family. Pam Kirkwood

Laurie Clark

Although we have lost a dear friend to cancer, her spirit will live on in her family and friends. Laurie was the wife of Gary and mother to Nathaniel (’09), Ben and Zach (’11), Abe and Spencer. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

I admired Laurie the first day I saw her at a West Point parent’s meeting over six years ago. Laurie radiates and has such a comfortable, confident air that I love to be near her and have enjoyed close contact with her through the years.-Jane Payne
