Monroe native thrives at West Point

Jesse Montgomery learned the value of discipline, teamwork and accountability growing up and that prepared him to succeed

WEST POINT, N.Y. — His smile got him in trouble.

“I always smiled when I wasn’t supposed to,” Jesse Montgomery said, recalling his early days at the United States Military Academy.

Of course, he said this with a smile. He can’t help it. It’s his nature to smile, except when someone tries to get him to do it, as a photographer recently did.

“Come on, let’s see a smile,” she coaxed.

“I got hammered for smiling during Beast (Barracks),” Montgomery told her, referring to the intense six-week basic training program cadets go through before they begin their first year at West Point.
