June 8 Minutes – Crowne Plaza Hotel

The June meeting of the West Point Parents Club of St. Louis was called to order by Co-President Mike Alderson at 1215 with the Pledge of Allegiance.  Mike McCullough offered a prayer for Cadets, Cadet Candidates, soldiers and family members.  A luncheon was then served.

                1.  Chris Rojewski introduced three members of the WP Class of 2008.  2LT Jeff Nichols, 2LT Rachel Larson and 2LT Clint Wing provided insights about their West Point experience for the Cadet Candidates and their families. 

                2.  Frank Janoski, West Point Class of 1974 offered his recommendations for the Plebe Year and R-Day.  He mentioned the New West Point Commandant, BG Linnington, Class of 1980.  He also reviewed the results of various undergraduate evaluation studies which found that West Point ranks among the top schools in the country in both engineering and liberal arts.  June 15 was the last day to pre-order Army/Navy football tickets.   

                3.  The Class of 2012 candidates introduced themselves; present were Tate Husemann, Kevin Lucas  and Sarah Binder of O’Fallon Il,  Kevin Collins, Ladue H.S. and the NM Preparatory Institute, Jacob Standley, Osage Beach, Julia Schemel,  St. Vincent HS in Perryville, Jason Newell from Rolla, and Dan Krumrey, Parkway Central H.S and lives in Chesterfield, MO.

                4.  A break was then taken, with the Cadet Candidates given the opportunity to meet privately with current Cadets and the Class of 2008 speakers.

                5.  Club Co-President Nancy Alderson reviewed background information on the WPPC and discussed the geographic areas covered.  She then discussed the upcoming meetings:  September (annual Boodle meeting), November, February 2009 (at Scott AFB), and the April 2009 business meeting.

                6.  The annual All Academies ball in late December will be hosted by Navy this year at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

                7.  The Activities Committee continues to be involved with Operation Support our Troops, Wheels for Warriors and sending boodle to deployed troops.  Marge McCullough may be contacted with any questions or offers of help with this committee.

                8.  Webmaster Mike McCullough discussed the valuable information available on the WPPC of St. Louis website.  Included in this website are the membership directory, club calendar, photos of previous meetings, links to the Pointer View and AOG Assembly magazine, the Master Calendar, and other features.  Mike will call all members individually for membership renewal.

                9.  Mike Alderson stated that Class of 2012 families will be called by current members of the WPPC to determine how the club can fulfill their needs.

                10. Marge McCullough reviewed her committee’s activities, including sending undergarments to the troops and the wounded soldiers at Landstuhl, Germany.  She reminded attendees that the WPPC is a 501c3 organization, and donations are tax deductible. Congratulations 2008 graduates!

September Boodle Meeting, Saturday Sept. 6

The Boodle Meeting will be Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at 12:30 PM at the home of Alan and Annette Mandel – call 618-263-7828 for directions. Check our website for a map to The Mandel’s home (From I64 Exit 36). This is a pot luck luncheon & door prizes will be provided by the Grad parents. The Club will provide drinks and table service; please bring the following:

West Point Society Charity Golf Tournament – August 19th

Enclosed is the WPPC St. Louis area membership form.  If you have not yet sent in your membership information and dues, please do so by Sept 6, 2008.  We appreciate your financial support, as this covers the cost of printing, postage, boodle and other club expenses.  Dues paying members in our club receive newsletters and informational emails.   Please also note that if you desire a WPPC name badge, there is a space on the form for your order.

 

Toys for Tots/Military Academies Women’s Soccer Classic, September 5-7

The West Point women’s team will play Friday, Sept. 5 at 5:30 PM against Missouri State, (SLU will play Nebraska at 7:30), and Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11:00 AM vs. Southeast Missouri State (SLU plays SEMO at 1:00 PM).  Games will be played on the SLU Campus.  This will be Coach Ventriglia’s last trip to St. Louis since he will be retiring after this season.  He enters his last campaign with 250 career victories.  This will also be Firstie Amelia Janoski’s last tournament in St. Louis.  The team has a good chance to make the Patriot League tournament and hopefully secure the NCAA bid.  Please plan to come out and support the girls.  

 

Brag News

Maj Thomas Shea ’92 is stationed at Fr. Bragg, and has safely returned from Iraq for the sixth time.  He will deploy again in August

 

Maj Jay Broemmel ’95 was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service while in Iraq. Jay is the son of Bo & Judy Broemmel.

 

Capt. Robert McCullough ’04 reported on July 1 to Ft. Sill, OK to begin the 18 week Field Artillery Career Captain’s Course.  Robert is the son of Mike and Marge McCullough.

 

1LT Michael Collins, Jr. ‘06 is a platoon leader with 3-73 Cav, 1st BCT, 82nd Airborne.  He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service while in Iraq.  Michael is the son of Mike and Sarah Collins.

 

1LT Joseph Sanfilippo ’06 has been in Afghanistan since Oct, 2007.  He is the Fire Direction Officer, and will return to his post in Vincenza Italy in late July, where he will be Fire Support Officer.  He has been training the Afghan National Army officers and soldiers in field artillery.   Joseph is the son of Joe and Pam Sanfilippo.

 

2LT Adam Hilkenkamp ’07 is a Military Police Executive Officer at Ft. Leonard Wood.  Adam is the son of Karen Hilkenkamp.

 

2LT Rachel Larson ’08 received the Association of the Bar of the City of New Committee on Military Affairs and Justice Award, the highest academic achievement in the American legal system field of study.   She will attend officer training at Ft. Sill, OK, then Quartermaster training at Ft. Lee, VA.  Rachel is the daughter of Mary and Nathan Larson.

 

2LT Sean Flachs ‘08 recently completed the “post graduation wedding tour!”  Sean will join the 5th Combat Engineers after Engineer Basic.  Sean is the son of Patrick and Lorraine Flachs.

 

2LT Monica Shea ’08 graduated in the top 15% of her class as an Economics major, and received a departmental award as top performer in Econometrics II.  She is engaged to be married to 2LT Lt Ryan Schubert, ’07 and will report to Ft. Bragg in January, and will be in the 82nd Airborne.  Monica is the daughter of Thomas and Martha Shea and brother of Maj. Thomas Shea, ’92.

 

2LT Clinton Wing ’08 was awarded the language department scroll for excellence in foreign language and was inducted into the Sigma Phi Iota Honor Society.  He reports to Ft. Knox , then to Ft. Sill in Sept. for BOLC2.  He will then join his unit (3 Brigade-First Cav.) at Ft. Hood, Texas.   Clinton is the son of Steve and Becky Wing. 

 

Amelia Janoski ’09 was inducted into the Engineering Management Honor Society (Epsilon Mu Eta).  She was given an award as the top student in the Decision Analysis Course in Systems Engineering.  She spent June in Hawaii with a Signal Corps unit, and is interning in July with the St. Louis baseball Cardinals in stadium operations as an academic enhancement to her Engineering Management major.  She will return to WP in August for pre-season soccer training.  Amelia is the daughter of Frank Janoski ’74.

 

Michelle Alderson ‘09 is attending CLDT this summer, and majoring in Life Sciences.  She is a member of the 2008 National Champion West Point Orienteering Team. Michelle is the daughter of Mike and Nancy Alderson.

 

Joshua Wiley ’10 is a member of the West Point Orienteering team.  Joshua is the son of Rich and Mary Ann Wiley.

 

Robert Mandel ’10 is training new Cadets in Beast 1.  He will play corner for spring football in the fall.  He is majoring in Russian and Spanish, and will spend the spring, 2009 semester in Russia.  Robert is the son of Annette and Alan Mandel.

 

Christopher Rojewski ’11 in enjoying his summer leave and looking forward to CFT and his training at Ft. Knox.  Christopher is the son of Chris and Vickie Rojewski.

 

Alan Spadone ’11 is finishing CFT at Camp Buckner and Ft. Knox.   He enjoyed of a very informative AIAD trip to Israel in June, joining other West Point Cadets, Naval Academy Midshipmen, Air Force Cadets, and faculty members. Alan is the son of Kathy and Don Spadone.
