Go under the freeway, and continue straight through the first stoplight. Turn right at the second stoplight (Rebekah Street), and then left again to enter the parking lot. AGENDA West Point Parents Club Meeting Minutes -- Election of 2005 Officers -- President Fran and Andy Lushenko called the meeting to order on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 1:30 PM. The meeting was held at JB Lawn, Salem, Oregon and 18 members were present. President Andy Lushenko read the Cadet Prayer. Presidents' Report: Fran and Carol Stover gave USMA mugs to those individuals who shipped the boodle for our cadets free of charge. It was reported that Cadet Cody Pittman had surgery as a result from an injury in Sprint Football. A card was passed around and will be sent to Cody along with a gift certificate to Grant Hall. Carol Stover will take care of this for the club. Marilyn reported that Cody was released from Keller this morning. He will be on crutches for 6-8 weeks with a full leg brace. Fran reported that the McLean house retained $50 of the $100 deposit following the June picnic as the result of a broken chair. We will let it go this time and will keep a watchful eye the next time we host a gathering there. It was suggested that next time we have the caretaker do a final check before we leave the site. AIM's (Admission Information Meetings) will be held the end of October. Capt. Amy Meeks will be in Oregon presenting in various locations in the state. Corvallis will host an AIM on the 28th and Portland will host in the morning of the 30th. Patty Klacius reported that admissions are down in all academies, not just USMA. Vice President's Report: none Secretary's Minutes: The minutes were read. Rosemary Peil moved to accept the minutes as read. Andy Lushenko second the motion and the minutes were approved as read with a vote of 18 yes, 0 no. Treasurer's Report:[The club is solvent -- for security reasons club funds total has been removed from the internet. Any club member can email either the club President or Treasurer and receive current club totals and/or latest Treasurer's Report -- the Treasurer.] George shared with the membership that he will put the treasurer's report on the website in a disclosed location. He reported that 15 new plebe parents have paid their dues. Carol Stover moved to accept the treasurer's report and Jim Kerr second the motion. The motion passed 18 yes, 0 no. The WP.org website was brought to the attention of the membership. George moved to raise the contribution from $25. twice a year to a one-time contribution of $75. per year. Christine Doyle second the motion. The service use was discussed and that the club could elect to adjust the contribution amount in the future. The motion passed 17 yes, 1 no. Nomination Report: Michelle and Todd Petersen - Presidents Fran asked for any other nominations from the floor. Marilyn called for the vote. The nominated slate of officers passed 18 yes, 0 no. Nominations from the floor were then opened. Rosemary Peil nominated Carol Stover for Vice President and Carol accepted the nomination. Carol Stover nominated Rosemary Peil for Secretary and Rosemary accepted the nomination. Andy Lushenko nominated Mary and Tim Plaisted for News Editors and they are considering the nomination. Unfinished Business: The All Academy Ball will be held in Washington this year. Oregon cadets and families are encouraged to attend if possible. It was discussed that Fran and George will work together to combine and streamline their efforts in emails and communication with the membership. New Business: Christmas Get-Together: Announcements: Next meeting Sue moved to adjourn the meeting. Rosemary second the motion. The motion passed 18 yes, 0 no. The meeting was adjourned at 2:35 PM. Aloha. We hope everyone had a nice holiday with their cadets and things are back to normal for you (they are for us, FINALLY)! The minutes from our last formal club meeting of October 23, 2004 held in Salem, Oregon are now posted. Please take a few minutes to review them. It is not too late if you have any comments or concerns about the minutes or wish to add agenda items for our upcoming Saturday, January 22, 2005 Wilsonville meeting. Just email your thoughts to me at westenra79@netzero.net On Sunday, December 11, 2004, Carole and Terry Cox graciously opened their home to the club for a holiday drop-in open house from 1 - 4 pm. The intent was that people could come and go during that three hour period. Well, we are such party animals that people came at 1:00 pm and just stayed the entire time visiting and solving a number of world issues. It was quite enjoyable and once again, more than an abundance of food. The January meeting will be the installation of your new club officers: Co-presidents Michelle/Todd Petersen; Co-vice-presidents Carole Cox/Carole Stover; Secretary Rosemary Peil and Co-treasurers/Newsletter Editors George/Wendy Loyd. In addition, there are two volunteer positions open - boodle coordinator and club historian. I am sure Carole Stover (current boodle coordinator) would appreciate easing someone into the position so she can assume her co-vice-president position in earnest. And do not forget George. He is searching for someone to work with to take over the Newsletter when Kristin graduates in '06! That is just around the corner and will be here faster than anyone realizes. We will have two donated gifts to raffle. Vern and Diane Pritchard from Vale (Nathan '06) have provided a really nice Army Hawaiian shirt - size large; and Greg and Marilyn Pittman from Creswell (Cody '06) have provided an 8 ½ x 11" color '07 crest. Thank you Vern, Diane, Greg and Marilyn. And if any of you would like to add raffle items, you may bring them with you or mail them to me. Please be thinking about how each of you can support the club. Remember you do not necessarily need to be an officer to make a difference. Just providing feedback if you cannot make the meetings is really appreciated. I know I have enjoyed hearing from Vern and Diane, Kerrie Davis (Medford), Mary Devany (last heard of from Serbia, I think), Beth and Jim Tardieu (Grants Pass), Jim and Mary Tomlinson (Baker City) and Bryan and Angel Tinnin (LaGrande). So even if you cannot make the meetings, send us a line and let us know how you are doing and how your cadet is doing. Bear in mind, we are in this together! Andy and I have enjoyed serving as your co-presidents and we will continue to be a part of this club. You are our friends. Article New athletic director Anderson on the job [Editor: The new Army Athletic Director's last job was at OREGON STATE University. ] Strong role models play an integral part in every successful person’s life and having that foundation can help create a domino effect that continues for generations. New Army athletic director Kevin Anderson is the embodiment of hard work and character learned from a generation of men and women who blazed a path for him to being the man he is today. Anderson is now a pioneer in his field, the first African-American to become an athletic director at any of the military academies, and he knows that he benefits from the people who established the opening. “I’ve always been fortunate to have strong, black male role models in my life, starting with my father, Ralph, and uncles,” Anderson said. “My father was a sergeant in the Army and that’s how he raised us and instilled education, values and caring.” The U. S. Military Academy leadership hired Anderson Dec. 13 from Oregon State after a successful stint where he helped balance the athletic department’s budget for the first time in nearly 15 years. His wealth of sports knowledge also comes from stints at the University of California - Berkeley and Stanford University athletic departments. But his path took a different direction in mid-stream as the San Francisco native spent the first 10 years of his working life at the Xerox Corporation. “I fell into this (sports management) half-way through my tenure at Xerox,” Anderson said. “I was chosen to participate in a program to work with underprivileged young people in Oakland. I was working with kids that weren’t achieving higher standards in math and science. “Through that, I saw that if you make an investment that those kids will flourish and when I returned to Xerox it wasn’t the same,” Anderson added. During that time while he was officiating football with a high school friend, federal judge Mark Jacobs, they talked about sports administration and he recommended Anderson for a job at Stanford. He would serve four years with the San Francisco Education Fund before he applied for a job at Stanford in 1993 and has never looked back since. Since taking over as athletic director here Jan. 18, the 1979 San Francisco State University graduate has found the transition to be seamless due to the West Point community. “I’ve felt welcomed since day one, this is truly family and to be accepted into the (academy) family the way I have been -- I can’t thank them enough,” Anderson said. “The community is making me feel that I’ve always been a part of this which makes the transition easier. “I have a sense of pride and loyalty to the academy and I will put my best foot forward because of my position and the history of this place,” Anderson added. A six-man panel went through an intense interview process to find the right man to replace former AD Rick Greenspan, who is now AD at Indiana University, and Anderson shined over seven other finalists, many of whom were West Point graduates. “We had a strong field of applicants that included West Point graduates, career Army officers and professionals in sports administration,” said U. S. Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. William J. Lennox Jr. “Among those talented prospects, we were looking for the right fit in terms of character, leadership, experience and vision. Kevin emerged as the best all-around candidate.” As the passionate Anderson gets used to his new environment, he wants to evaluate every aspect of the Directorate of Intercollegiate Athletics. “Prior to joining Oregon State University, President Ed Ray came aboard and said, “I’m going to be a freshman for the first six-to-nine months, so I can take everything in,” Anderson said. “I would like to think that I’m a plebe for six-to-nine months, not to say that I won’t make a decision that has to be made, but I truly want to get more of a flavor of the academy and its athletic department.” The overseer of 25 Division I sports, Anderson begins his tenure here as the Army football team reverts back to independent status after seven less than spectacular seasons in Conference USA. Every Army football fan is looking forward to a more successful run under his and Bobby Ross’ guidance. “We looked at our scheduling, how we schedule and determined to play teams with a profile more like the academy,” Anderson said. “We (Bobby Ross and I) talked strategy and I think we both believe we’re on schedule and there’s no doubt we believe that we will continue to progress. “We will be competitive. We’ll play competitive teams with our goal to make a bowl game,” Anderson added. “There’s no reason to believe with the success at Navy and how they’ve done it, that it can’t be done here.” “Todd told me there’s no finer man, not coach, but man, than Coach Ross,” Anderson said. “There’s no better man to put us back on track than Bobby Ross. I’ve worked with Bill Walsh, Tyrone Willingham and Jeff Tedford, all fine coaches, but I hold Coach Ross in the same light as those gentlemen if not more so.” Working with the cadet athletes and Soldiers every day is also one of the big reasons he loves the job here because it solidifies his firm belief in leadership. “I’ve worked at schools that compare academically, but the leadership qualities and values that these young people have is quite amazing,” Anderson said. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to work with these people because it helps me further myself everyday to continue to be an effective leader and hone my leadership skills.” While settling into his job, Anderson tries to deflect the importance of his place as the first African-American AD in academy history. The fact is there are only nine African-Americans who lead the 117 Division I-A athletic departments in the United States, and three were hired in December, which also included Daryl Gross at Syracuse University and McKinley Boston Jr. at New Mexico State, in addition to Anderson. “I wish I could take credit for being the first, but I’ve been around people who’ve been the first all my life and haven’t gotten credit for it,” said the 49-year old AD. “They’re the ones who allowed me to be where I am right now. In one way it’s flattering, but in other ways it’s saddening because I’ve been around these people who should have benefited from what they did, but I’m just benefiting from the fruits of their labor.” Since the days of Henry O. Flipper, who was the first African-American to graduate West Point in 1877, the academy has been a leader in its diversity and judging people on their merit more so than their ethnicity or the color of their skin. “Civil-rights struggles in previous generations have liberated all of us, and today, minorities have more opportunities than ever,” Lennox said. “The U.S. Military Academy supports equal opportunity and enjoys access to a broad spectrum of candidates, with that being said, we hired Kevin Anderson because of his background and vision, not because of his race.” Story and photo by Eric S. Article Authorization Act add-ons will impact cadets The Fiscal Year 2005 National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law by the President Oct. 28, contains two provisions that directly affect cadets and graduates of the U.S. Military Academy, said Alan Fox, a policy and planning officer in the academy’s Office of Policy, Planning and Analysis. Graduates will once again receive Regular Army commissions and cadets and midshipmen of the service academies are now eligible for medical care, dental care and disability benefits. Fox explained that since September 1996, all newly commissioned second lieutenants, regardless of commissioning source, received a Reserve commission. Historically, USMA graduates received Regular Army commissions. They were a source of pride and viewed as recognition for having graduated from the U.S. Military Academy. There was also a number of Army policies linked to the RA commission that provided a perceived advantage over the Reserve commission, such as protection during a reduction in force. Over the years, Congress gradually eliminated those policies to provide a level playing field for all officers regardless of commission or commissioning source. Since 1996, however, Congress, the Department of Defense and the services continued to study and discuss the Regular versus Reserve commission issue. Academy alumni also voiced their concerns to the Army’s leadership until earlier this year, when Congress decided to return to the policy of awarding Regular Army commissions for original appointments. At USMA, the Class of 2005 will be the first class to again receive RA commissions, Fox said. Graduates who received Reserve commissions and are currently still on active duty lists will be transitioned into the RA over the next one to five years, according to West Point’s Maj. Bill Willis, deputy adjutant general/strength management. The provision making cadets and midshipmen eligible for medical, dental and disability benefits is a very significant change to the status quo, Fox said. This change was brought about after Congress ordered a study on the subject. The findings by an outside contractor recommended that medical and dental disability treatment and care be provided for cadets as it would be for any other individual on active duty, according to Fox. “Historically, cadets and midshipmen at the service academies were specifically excluded from disability by law,” he said. “We viewed that provision as being inconsistent with the active duty status of cadets, especially given the military training they are required to participate in to graduate and be commissioned.” Fox said the disability legislation is not retroactive, but added that DoD and service specific regulations still need to be written, which potentially could take until next spring. It is an immensely useful resource for Cadet parents and other folks interested in keeping abreast of current happenings at West Point throughout the year. The Pointer View is published by the Public Affairs Office, U.S. Military Academy and printed and distributed by the Poughkeepsie Journal. It is published in the interest of the personnel at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point but is a valuable resource for other people interested in West Point (for example ... parents). Today's band consists of four components: the Concert Band, the Hellcats, the Jazz Knights, and the Support Staff. These combine to form the Marching Band. Due to changing security requirements at West Point, call the Academy Band’s performance hotline at (845) 938-2617 or check the USMA main website before leaving for the concert. Also, allow extra travel time to move through the military police checkpoint. ALL CONCERTS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
