Lunch/Tour/Meeting at Ft. Lewis, Sat. Oct. 14th

We have exciting plans in the works for our Saturday, October 14th meeting, so be sure and mark your calendars.  The Officers' Club, while not normally open then, has reserved the Rainier Lounge for us for lunch/meeting from noon - 2p.m..  We will have a "build-your-own-sandwich" w/iced tea - $6.00 per person, and will need a final paid "head" count before October 10th.  After lunch, we will have our own personally guided tour of the Ft. Lewis Military Museum from 2:30-4:00p.m. After that we may make contact with a few of our 1st and 2nd LTs who are currently stationed there, or you may tour the rest of the post on your own, as it may be an "open post" by that date.
Directions:  Take exit 120 off I-5 to Ft. Lewis, not "North Ft. Lewis".  At the front gate, you will be given a pass after showing vehicle registration and proof of insurance (unless post is "open"; don't count on it).  Follow 41st Div. Dr. to Bitar Ave.  Turn right on Bitar Ave. and after about a half mile you will see the one story Officer's Club on the left. For those of you coming a distance, nearby overnight accomodations are readily available (see box below):
Note: If you know you will be unable to make our next (January) meeting, please bring your (non-perishable) boodle for our club's 30 cadets to this meeting. Evelyn Mears, our boodle person, will keep it for the January boodle-making. That way those of you who have only been able to contribute previously by cash donations, can have the fun of bringing "real items" this time.  Here's a photo of our boodle bags, ready to send, from our August meeting; we're back in school, (ABC's) with "Mother's" boodle--get it?

Minutes of BBQ/Pot Luck Lunch and Meeting Sunday, August 20th

The meeting was hosted by the Adams (Matt '02) at their home in Corvallis. (Thank you, Richard and Susan, we enjoyed the day.)  The following families were represented at this meeting: Cox, Cross, Fox, Kerr, Klascius, Mears and Selko.
The following members "volunteered" to assist with these functions; Carole Cox -Secretarial duties at the meeting, the Selkos will act as Historians and the Kerrs will send birthday cards to cadets.  A committee to nominate Club Officers will include: Bruce and Donna Cross, Terry and Carole Cox, and Lou and Marilyn Fox.
The treasurer reported $263.89 currently in the checking account and suggested merging savings and checking into one account.  Richard Adams moved to accept the minutes of the previous meeting and to merge the accounts. Both were approved by those in attendance.
The following issues and reminders were addressed by the President:
1. Send a picture of your cadet (to Patty, or Nancy Selko if '04, Marilyn Fox if '03).
2. Feel free to use West Point parents e-mail to send information to the whole group.
3. Remind cadets to vote and apply for an absentee ballot. Information available at www.vote.com.

6. Miscellaneous West Point logo items are available for purchase - some now at bargain prices. (This is part of our club's fund raising).  Also, Vladimir Arts http://vladimirarts.com/ gives a 10% kickback to the club if you mention your membership (tell them WPPC-Oregon & SW Washington) when purchasing, as do some boodle companies, while the cost to you remains the same.  So think of us, and thanks for your support!
7. West Point has a Center for Professional Development which deals with a variety of issues including time management, grief, and crisis. Patty showed brochures, which are available to anyone at the meetings.
8. Anyone wishing to purchase Return to Glory can order through the West-Point.org link  http://www.west-point.org/book/amazon/amazon.html
That helps west-point.org by a 20% kickback; costs you nothing more.
9. The organization of the Corps of Cadets chart was passed out. (Hardly anyone seems to understand this chart!)
10. Parents of the Class of 2003 are advised to obtain a brochure for ordering Rings.
11. Plebe Parent Weekend will be discussed at the next meeting which will be at Fort Lewis,Washington, on Saturday, October 14th.

                      ARMY BASE GUEST HOUSES
The direct number for the 5-Star Inn (several buildings located on West Point grounds, used to be at Stewart Airport) is (845) 938-6816 or (845) 446-1028/1034. It's website is:
                                                    http://www.usma.edu/dcfa/ACTIVITY/5STAR/5STAR.HTM
I believe your cadet must make reservations, but call and find out.  Often rooms are more like simple suites, with kitchen facilities, and quite inexpensive.  Can't beat it for convenience and cost!   An 800 number avilable for all Army installation guest houses (say, Fort Knox, Benning, etc) is: 1-800-GOARMY1  (save this number!)  This includes a very nice hotel for military personnel on the Disneyland, Orlando grounds for about $60.00/night!
All phones at USMA can be found in the on-line phone book at:
http://www.usma.edu/guide_page/agencies_phone.htm#   Just remember the area 914 code changes to 845 by December.

Remarks at JSCOPE 2000-Essay on Integrity
JANUARY 27, 2000                                                                      By General Charles C. Krulak

We study and we discuss ethical principles because It gives direction to what I call our moral compass. It is the understanding of ethics that becomes the foundation upon which we can deliberately commit to inviolate principles. It becomes the basis of what we are ... of what we include in our character. Based on it, we commit to doing what is right. We expect such commitment from our leaders. But most importantly, we must demand it of ourselves.

Sound morals and ethical behavior cannot be established or created in a day .. a semester ... or a year. They must be institutionalized within our character over time ... they must become a way of life. They go beyond our individual services and beyond our ranks or positions; They cut to the heart and to the soul of who we are and what we are and what we must be ... men and women of character. They arm us for the challenges to come and they impart to us a sense of wholeness. They unite us in the calling we now know as the profession of arms.

Of all the moral and ethical guideposts that we have been brought up to recognize, the one that, for me, stands above the rest ...the one that I have kept in the forefront of my mind ... is integrity. It is my ethical and personal touchstone. Integrity as we know it today, stands for soundness of moral principle and character - uprightness - honesty. Yet integrity is also an ideal ...a goal to strive for ... and for a man or woman to "walk in their integrity" is to require constant discipline and usage. The word integrity itself is a martial word that comes to us from an ancient Roman army tradition.

During the time of the 12 Caesars, the Roman army would conduct morning inspections. As the inspecting centurion would come in front of each legionnaire, the soldier would strike with his right fist the armor breastplate that covered his heart. The armor had to be strongest there in order to protect the heart from the sword thrusts and from arrow strikes. As the soldier struck his armor, he would shout "integritas", (in-teg-ri-tas) which in Latin means material wholeness, completeness, and entirety. The inspecting centurion would listen closely for this affirmation and also for the ring that well kept armor would give off. Satisfied that the armor was sound and that the soldier beneath it was protected, he would then move on to the next man.

A century passed and the rift between the legion and the imperial bodyguard and its excesses grew larger. To signify the difference between the two organizations, the legionnaire, upon striking his armor would no longer shout "integritas", (in-teg-ri-tas) but instead would shout "integer" (in-te-ger) means undiminished - complete - perfect. It not only indicated that the armor was sound, it also indicated that the soldier wearing

The armor was sound of character. He was complete in his integrity...his heart was in the right place...his standards and morals were high.

Integrity .... It is a combination of the words, "integritas" and "integer". It refers to the putting on of armor, of building a completeness ... a wholeness ... a wholeness in character. How appropriate that the word integrity is a derivative of two words describing the character of a member of the profession of arms. The military has a tradition of producing great leaders that possess the highest ethical standards and integrity. It produces men and women of character...character that allows them to deal ethically with the challenges of today and to make conscious decisions about how they will approach tomorrow. However, as I mentioned earlier, this is not done instantly. It requires that integrity becomes a way of life....it must be woven into the very fabric of our soul. Just as was true in the days of imperial Rome, you either walk in your integrity daily, or you take off the armor of the "integer" and leave your heart and soul exposed...open to attack.

My challenge to you is simple but often very difficult...wear your armor of integrity....take full measure of its weight...find comfort in its protection...do not become lax. And always, always, remember that no one

can take your integrity from you...you and only you can give it away!! The Biblical book of practical ethics - better known as the book of Proverbs - sums it up very nicely: "The integrity of the upright shall guide them: But the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them". (11:3)

FOX SPORTS NET TABS ARMY
FOR ADDITIONAL TELEVISION APPEARANCES

WEST POINT, N.Y. - While Army's annual season-ending clash with arch-rival Navy will once again be televised nationally by CBS Sports, the possibility remains that Fox Sports Net will opt to broadcast additional Black Knight contests as part of its national package with Conference USA. The C-USA football telecast package will appear on Fox Sports Net's 21 affiliates nation-wide, reaching over 70 million homes.
"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to appear on national television four times this fall," stated Army Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan. "This added exposure will afford Army fans across the country the chance to follow our team as we continue to build a program of which our faithful can be proud."
