Reception "R" Day
These pictures were taken on and around the United States Military
Academy on R Day.
Book a hotel room NOW. Highland Falls, Fort Montgomery, Cromwell,
Bear Mountain, and Newburgh all have hotels. There are also other towns
in the area. Newburg is approximately 30 minutes from West Point.
The other locations are closer.
Dress nice, but comfortably. Wear shoes that are good for walking!
Even though there are busses, actually being able to get on a bus is not
always possible. Bring drinks! The day is long. You may be
able to get some glances of New Cadets - but not necessarily yours.
Keep a sense of humor.
The day starts with you and your Cadet Candidates waiting in a long line
for processing. A quick speech from a West Point official, and then
the shortest 90 seconds to say goodbye. The next time you see your New
Cadet, the day will be almost over and the New Cadets will parade, showing
their new skills as a soldier. They will take their oath and march to
dinner. You will not be able to see and talk to them face-to-face
again until Acceptance Day in August.
