Hi All,

We had a great drop off with Thomas.  He seemed ready and more relaxed and confident than Richard 3 years ago.  Our highlight was seeing Thomas in the Supe’s slide show for the parents.  He was getting his afro cut.  What a riot.  I thought he would get it cut before we went to NY but he and his brother decided it was too great a potential story.  I will say we did have lots of stares and gawks as we stood in line for the buses.  Barry and I quickly put on sunglasses to avoid eye contact with others!  Another highlight was meeting the Critchfield family while we were both hanging out in Ike Hall.  Overall and with a lonely heart, we are doing well and hope Thomas is as well.  We are still touring in the East and don’t expect to be back to Kansas for another week or more.  One of our planned stops will be Ft. Campbell where Richard, ‘06, is doing CTLT.  We will be hanging by our cell phone on July 6.

Mary, unfortunately I haven’t met the other plebe parents yet so I will add that in addition to Thomas as a new cadet our older son, Richard, is a firstie.  R-Day was a lot less stressful because we knew what to expect but not any less painful the second time around.

Our next trip to West Point is in late August for Ring Week-end!  We plan on taking advantage of the year when both boys are in one place.

Greetings Family and Friends,

I just wanted to keep everyone updated about Byron.  We received a third letter from him today and he sounded great.  He wanted me to tell everyone to keep those letters coming.  He loves to get mail from the extended family and friends and wants to be kept informed about everything.  Byron said that he loves ruck marches, that the MREs are really good food and Sundays are nice because they get to sleep in until 0630.  He has two roommates, one from Davenport, IA and the other from Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. All of the football players are in A Company so that they can do PT together.  Byron said that he likes running with the Black Group for PT, which is the fastest group, but describes it as being “pleasantly tough”.  They did close quarters combat (CQC) a few days ago which he said was awesome and that he would show us a few moves later.

Thank you and please keep sending those letters of encouragement, jokes and entertaining news to Byron. It helps a lot.
