All candidates for admission to USMA (West Point) will be interviewed by a Military Academy
Admission Representative (MAAR). These interviews are
conducted in the Houston area usually during the period of September through March. MAARs are assigned to
specific high schools and they are
responsible for interviewing candidates from those schools.
A list of MAARs assigned to specific schools can be
accessed by using the
"Area Schools"
link shown below. Each candidate
should be contacted by their school's assigned MAAR to setup an interview. All
interviews will be conducted at a time and place mutually agreeable to both the
MAAR and the candidate. The interviews typically take less
than one hour. All candidates (and potential candidates) should contact
their school's assigned MAAR if they have any questions or need assistance
during the admissions process.
The purpose of the interview is
to assist the
candidate in the admissions process by answering their questions;
and to
evaluate the candidate for admission to West Point. During the
interview the MAAR will also discuss the following topics with the candidate:
● the purpose of the United
States Military Academy
●
the USMA academic program
● the service obligation after
graduation
●
the cadet honor code and system
●
the cadet leadership development system
●
the stress of the first year including cadet basic training
--
often
referred to as "Beast Barracks"
As the Admissions Office is aware of the candidate's academic and
personal achievements, the MAARs are charged with determining the candidate's
subjective and intangible qualities. It is these qualities that will
enable a candidate to succeed as a USMA Cadet and as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.
An
interview report will be submitted by the MAAR to the Admissions Office and will
be included in the candidate's admissions file.
