disposable cameras
"My son took pictures when he was out in the woods."
"They are small and can fit in a pocket easily. As my daughter
said when I asked if she was taking lots of pictures "you
just can't whip out a camera during formation and take pictures".
However, she has had time to take some and the disposable has
worked fine. Prepaid developing mailers would be nice too."
alarm clock
Alarm clock:
"My son needed a good alarm clock which could be set forsmall
time intervals in case he got the chance for a nap."
"I went with the practical and when my daughter was home
over Thanksgiving she asked if my feelings would be hurt if we
looked for an unusual one. Since plebes can only have three items
on their desks, the clock doesn't count as one of their extra
things. We found some very cute ones but the alarm wasn't loud
enough. Be sure to get a loud alarm, with thier lack of sleep
they need to be able to have it anoy them."
8 x 10 picture frame
"Some of her friends went together and got a nice one and
had it engraved. Then we went through her photos and made collages
that we took to the local Walmart and had printed on the Kodak
machine that makes the reprints. We made several different pages
so while she only has one frame she can change the pictures often."
Gift certificates to Victoria Secrets. (females obviously)
After Beast the one area they can have a little bit of individuality
is their undergarments.
Silk Long Johns
Highland Falls Restaurants/McDonald's gift certificates
"There is a McDonald's right outside the gate and within
walking priveleges when they get to have those. Also, McDonald's
delivers on post. Actually there are 6 or 7 local eating establishements
that will deliver on post and a gift certificate to any of those
would be appreciated."
digital camera
"As a graduation present for our son we gave him a Sony digital
camera. Made Plebe year a lot easier for us (lots of pictures
over the internet) and for him (Upperclassmen liked getting pictures
of their cars)"
printer compatable with PC's.
One that can print both Black ink and Color (Color is good for
Math Projects and such), and print reasonably fast. Save the box
so you can ship it in the Fall.
Speakers for PC
CDs
DVDs
Desk Lamp
two watches - one for the field (but best one where the light can be controlled so not to give away a position but so that can be read at night), one for dress with uniforms mini-flashlight
"Bugle Notes"
"I ordered a copy of "Bugle Notes" from the gift
shop in the Visitors center. It wasn't cheap (about $50 I think)
but it seemed appropriate and gave him an opportunity to learn
some "knowledge" before arriving on R Day."
Videos about West Point - (1) "West Point Story"
video with James Cagney, (2) "The Long Gray Line" video
about Marty Maher, (3) "The West Point Story" 2-vol
about the history of West Point, (4) "Beast Barracks"
video from Academy Photo.
"[Note: "Beast Barracks" cost about $75 but I wanted
to make sure that my son knew exactly what he was getting into.
I think it helped. Nothing came as a surprise to him in beast
since he'd seen examples of it already on the video and it does
an excellent job of showing what R-day will be like."
Books about West Point - (1) "A Civil War" book about Army/Navy football, and (2) "Once An Eagle"
West Point Flag
"We fly ours outside like some people fly those holiday flags,
but it could be put on a wall or something too."
