Networking Group is proud to have as its guest speaker Major General (Retired)
Bill Klein, USMA class of '54. General Klein has had a distinguished career
both within the service and in civilian life, and has a long history of
service to the nation and the Tampa Bay community.
As a military officer, General Klein commanded at every level through brigade,
and was deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. He is a highly
decorated veteran of the Dominican Republic and Vietnam conflicts. As a
senior officer, he had distinguished service at the highest levels of the
U.S. Government in Washington.
After retirement, from 1987-90, Mr. Klein was the vice president of the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, directing the business operation of the team. He
made the Bucs one of the most profitable teams in the National Football
League despite three losing seasons.
From 1991-1996 Mr Klein ran one of the top American companies in Turkey,
which provided all the logistics support for our U.S. military bases in
that country. His business acumen and leadership have been evident throughout
military and business careers.
His education includes a BS in Engineering from USMA, a Master of Political
Science (Public Administration and International Relations) from the University
of South Florida, and Senior Executive Studies in National Security at
Harvard University.
During his years in St. Petersburg, Mr. Klein has participated in a variety
of community activities including: Little League baseball coach; Board
of Directors and Treasurer of the Caya Costa Homeowners Association; Member
of the Stewardship Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida;
President of the Florida West Coast West Point Alumni Association; Member
of the Board of Governors of the Centre Club; Member of the St. Petersburg
Chamber of Commerce and member of the Chamber's Sports committee; and Member
of the Board of Directors of the Bayou Club.
Mr. Klein has been a resident of St. Petersburg since 1969. His wife of
41 years, Lynsey, a graduate of University of South Florida, is a homemaker
The Kleins have five grown children, all of whom attended public schools
in St. Petersburg.
On January 8, 1997, Mr. Klein announced his candidacy for Mayor of St.
Petersburg. His topic for the Networking Group will be "Leadership
in Business and Government."
