Acting as the “Friends of Mount Bonnell,” the West Point Society of Central Texas formally adopted Mount Bonnell in 2010, as part of the City of Austin’s Adopt-a-Park program. With over 700 graduates in Central Texas, members of the group have joined with other citizen stakeholders to help support the City of Austin’s management of the beloved landmark.
“In a little more than five years we’ve raised over $40,000 in grants and donations from outside sources and led over 1,000 hours of community cleanup and maintenance activities at the park,” said Stan Bacon, WPSCT member. “We’ve enlisted the participation of neighbors, families and friends, and organizations as diverse as Scouts, Chipotle employees, Austin Firefighters, and the Central Texas Mountaineers. Yesterday Bacon supervised volunteers from the Mountaineers as they rappelled down the face of the mountain, removing 25 large trash bags of litter from the site.
In 2015, Austin Parks Foundation (APF) provided a $13,000 grant to the Friends of Mount Bonnell to fund the planned trail improvements, scheduled to commence in March. Receipt of the APF grant was conditional on raising $3,000 in funds from other sources.
“We are thrilled to partner with the West Point Society of Central Texas on this important project,” said Ladye Anne Wofford, APF programs director. “Mt. Bonnell is such a special place in our city and we are excited to help make these much needed repairs to this historic landmark.”
Past park improvement funding for Friends of Mount Bonnell has been sourced from the Austin Parks Foundation, Keep Austin Beautiful and private citizen benefactors – resulting in improved views, better signage, a restored historical monument, a newly created Covert Park marker, and an information kiosk atop the mountain.
Although several major donors have already made generous contributions to Austin Parks Foundation’s Mount Bonnell fund to accomplish the planned improvements, additional contributions in support of future work can be made at https://austinparks.org/sfaform/support-mount-bonnell or by phoning APF at (512) 477-1566 ext 12.
Comprising graduates of the U.S. Military Academy, The West Point Society of Central Texas is a 501(c)(3) organization which “adopted” Covert Park at Mount Bonnell as part of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department Adopt-a-Park program in 2010. Since then WPSCT has partnered with PARD, the Austin Parks Foundation, and Keep Austin Beautiful in projects to propose improvements, restore views, install an information kiosk, improve signage, and conduct frequent clean up and site maintenance days. There are over 700 West Point alumni in the Central Texas area.
