One Tribal Uprising, One Infantry Lieutenant: The Long Gray Line Honors Unsung Hero of the Texas War for Independence, Joseph Bonnell, West Point Class of 1825

Marc Conselman '96, as First Lieutenant Joseph Bonnell, Class of 1825, as he would have appeared in 1836, addressing the audienceOn March 6th the WPS of Central Texas celebrated Joseph Bonnell Day in cooperation with The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. Marc Conselman '96, portrayed Lt Bonnell, Class of 1825, in a narration of the exploits of a graduate who, acting alone, successfully built on a relationship of mutual trust and peaceful relationships with the leaders of a warlike tribal people in a remote and hostile setting, helping to avert armed conflict and supporting the creation of the Republic of Texas.

Marc Conselman 96, as First Lieutenant Joseph Bonnell, Class of 1825, designated Hero of the Texas Revolution with BG Patrick Finnegan '71 at Joseph Bonnell Day ceremony in Austin Texas, March 6, 2010Dean BG Patrick Finnegan '71 addressed attendees, observing that “West Pointers have always been agile thinkers, using their talents, using their integrity, using what they learned as West Point cadets and beyond to solve problems as Joseph Bonnell did – not using force necessarily, but using other methods to avoid war…”

Speaking of Lieutenant Bonnell’s relevance to the modern era, the Dean went on to say “We have to have people who are thinkers as well as warriors – and that’s clearly what Joseph Bonnell was. …the current generation of Cadets and graduates are worthy successors to Joseph Bonnell. They’re using their ingenuity, their values - using what they learned at West Point not only to fight wars, but to be scholars, to be thinkers.”

The band of the 1st Cavalry Division in concert at Texas Independence Day ceremony held by West Point Society of Central Texas on March 6, 2010, commemorating heroism of Lt Joseph Bonnell, West Point Class of 1825The event was also attended by MG Jose Mayorga, Adjutant General of Texas, the successor to Sam Houston as Commanding General of the Texas armed forces. The Band of the 1st Cavalry Division and the color guard of the Ross Volunteer Company of Texas A&M were also featured participants in the ceremony.
