Stockings for Soldiers Knitted Hat Pattern

Supplies
100% wool yarn (Worsted weight) in dark colors: black, brown, dark gray, dark green, olive green, navy, and varigated yarn in these colors

It is very important to use 100% wool. Acrylics and synthetics melt and would be dangerous if the soldiers were near fire

Size 6 US(16 inch) circular knitting needle
Size 8 US(16 inch) circular knitting needle
Size 8 US(7 inch) double pointed needles (4)

Cast on 84 stitches on a size 6(16 inch) circular needle, make sure stitches are not twisted, join together, place marker.
Knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches, for 6 rows.
Switch to size 8 (16 inch) circular needle and knit all rows until the piece measures 9 inches from the cast on edge to the needle.
Begin decreasing the number of stitches by knitting 2 stitches together across the row.
Knit the next row.
Do this two row pattern 3 times. As the rows get shorter (fewer stitches), the stitches should be placed on double pointed needles and worked from there.
Cut off the yarn leaving a 14 inch piece, pull yarn through the remaining stitches, gather and tie off. Weave the “tails” of yarn into hat.
The hats need to be finished by November 20, 2009, so they can be packed and mailed to the soldiers.
