Joe Steffy Outland Trophy Winner 1947
Joe Steffy had impact football careers at both the University of Tennessee and West Point. Coming out of high school in Chattanooga, Steffy enrolled at Tennessee and played on the 1944 team, which went on to the Rose Bowl. He was then appointed to the United States Military Academy and played guard for the football team three years. In 1947 he was captain of the team and winner of the Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman. After graduation from West Point, Joe served in the Army for five years. He fought in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He was later an aide to General "Iron Mike" O'Daniel. Following his active Army career, Steffy coached at West Point for five years before going into his own business in Newburgh, New York.
