"Later, we visited the Uniform Factory where they make all the cadet uniforms. They told us that the 48 buttons are dipped in 24 karat gold and each uniform (from the India whites to the crested bathrobes) is tailored to fit perfectly year after year. They had black worsted wool zip-up short hooded jackets we could buy with "USMA - Class of 2002" emblazoned on the front. "

"We ate brunch in the mess hall -- family style with the cadet sitting at the head of the table playing the role of the host. All the condiments have to be in "height order," the plates a thumb from the edge of the table. Daniel enjoyed giving us "military manner" training. This is the kid who kept his elbows on the table and thought napkins were for decoration -- it was really weird. The food was delicious (Omelet, Fried Steak, Noodles & Chicken, Cold Cereal)"

"Everyone was very friendly. One of the highlights was sharing in the camaraderie on the shuttle bus with all the other families. It brought back warm memories of military life when I was a kid. Questions about where you are from, what airport you flew into, where you are staying and what company your cadet is in was standard conversation. The families of the new cadets easily entered into a huge family of shared problems and contagious excitement.

The gift shops were great! I visited every one that I came within a mile's radius and I am now the proud owner of everything from a mouse pad to a travel mug with West Point on it.

The tour of the Superintendent's House was real interesting. I could almost see Mrs. Lee walking down the winding staircase in her hooped skirt and General Lee sitting in front of the marble fireplace. There is a portrait of him over the fireplace in the living room -- he's dressed in a blue uniform -- he was a handsome man (blue eyes). There were hundreds of priceless items -- gifts from dignitaries from all over the world -- past and present. "

"We finally got to take our cadet off campus and his first request -- Let's go to the mall! So after buying a book and pointing out possible Christmas presents, we went to his place of choice to eat -- Burger King. Later we get to the PX and bought an electric heater for his room.

"Oh, yes, his room... We toured the dorm -- it's a tall gray gothic carved granite building with cold stone floors. His bed is so well made it looks like a department store display. Every item in the room was in proper order and everything absolutely spotless! This was a real experience for me to think of him living in such cleanliness. It must be a shock to his system. He showed us his clothing and explained when he wore what uniform. He said that he never sleeps under the sheets. It would be too hard to make the bed perfectly every day. He has some elastic thingamagig that keep the sheets, and blanket tight. He sleeps on top of the bed with a comforter he keeps in his private foot locker -- his one place of privacy. They have inspection twice a day. His room mate was very courteous."
